Vernovis is looking for a Software Developer III who will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing critical enterprise applications that support core business operations. This role is heavily focused on COBOL development within a large-scale transactional environment and is ideal for a developer who enjoys working with complex business logic, high-volume processing systems, and legacy applications that remain essential to the organization's success. The successful candidate will partner closely with business stakeholders, analysts, and technical teams to support existing systems, implement enhancements, and contribute to modernization initiatives that integrate mainframe applications with newer technologies. Work responsibilities are approximately 40% application enhancements and new development, 40% production support and issue resolution, and 20% modernization and integration efforts.

What You'll Do:
- Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise applications using COBOL in a mainframe environment.
- Analyze business requirements and translate them into scalable, reliable application solutions supporting critical business processes.
- Modify and enhance existing COBOL programs, batch jobs, JCL, and related system components.
- Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement long-term solutions to improve system stability and performance.
- Support and optimize high-volume batch processing, file transfers, and transactional systems.
- Collaborate with business analysts, project teams, and end users to deliver application enhancements and resolve system issues.
- Participate in modernization initiatives, including API integrations, data conversion efforts, and migration projects involving legacy systems.
- Review code, document technical solutions, and promote development standards, testing practices, and operational excellence.
- Assist with application releases, deployments, and production support activities.
- Mentor junior developers and share knowledge of business processes and legacy application architecture.
- Strong hands-on experience developing and supporting COBOL applications in an enterprise environment.
- Experience working with IBM Mainframe technologies including JCL, VSAM, CICS, DB2, and batch processing environments.
- Ability to analyze and modify complex legacy code while maintaining system integrity and performance.
- Experience troubleshooting production issues and performing root cause analysis within mission-critical applications.
- Strong understanding of SDLC methodologies, testing practices, code management, and documentation standards.
- Experience integrating legacy applications with modern platforms, APIs, databases, or cloud-based solutions is highly desirable.
- Strong SQL and relational database experience.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work directly with business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver practical technical solutions.
- Experience within insurance, financial services, healthcare, or other highly regulated industries is preferred.
