Summary
This pilot internship program, offered in partnership with the Vermont Association of Broadcasters (VAB), provides up to 120 hours of hands-on learning in studio broadcast engineering. Designed to give interns an introductory overview of day-to-day operations in both radio and television environments, the program emphasizes how studio engineering supports and contributes to the seamless delivery of media content to our listeners and viewers. Interns will observe and assist with technical workflows, gaining foundational experience in broadcast production and engineering support.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Exposure to Modern Audio over IP (AoIP) Broadcasting systems
Basic concepts in AoIP
Introduction to Wheatstone Wheatnet
Hands-on experience configuring a simple Wheatnet audio over IP system
Application of Wheatnet to daily radio production and air product delivery
Exposure to Radio Automation systems
Overview of ENCO DAD automation system
Overview of traffic and operations, as related to air product delivery
Exposure to Live Radio show Technical Production
Brief sit in on Morning edition and All Things Considered live shows
Reinforces understanding of satellite feeds from NPR, live hosting, automation, and clip playout
Act as Audio Assistant or (A2) for live broadcast classical performances
Shadow broadcast engineer to learn studio maintenance, technical support, and studio production workflows
Introduction to Audio and Video Remote Contribution Methods
Comrex and TieLine audio codecs
FieldTap and ReportIT remote contributor applications
Quicklink video contribution hardware and software
Broadcast telephone system
Sit-in on Vermont Edition live broadcast using some of the above
Exposure to television production environment
Overview of production equipment
Sit-in on production of Vermont This Week
Exposure to a radio and/or television transmitter facility
Ride-along with TX engineer to appropriate site*; observe maintenance and repair tasks; understand basic air product flow from studio to transmitter
* site TBD, likely a drive-up site like Randolph, VT
If opportunities are available in the internship timeframe, intern will assist with:
A live music broadcast
A remote radio broadcast
A video production

Position Requirements
Education and Experience
Candidates must be entering their junior or senior year at an accredited college, university, or trade school; be majoring or minoring in or enrolled in a program for broadcast television/radio, communications, media, audio/video production, marketing, engineering or other related fields; be a Vermont resident OR a non-resident student currently attending an accredited college or university in Vermont.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly talk, hear, and sit or stand. This position requires the use of computers, hand tools, and electronic test equipment. This position requires occasional travel. The employee may be exposed to harsh environmental conditions and areas where high voltage is present.
Physical Demands
Work involves standing and walking for brief periods, bending, and filing, but most duties are from a seated position. There is potential for eyestrain from reading detailed materials on a computer screen. Deadlines, workloads during peak periods, and changing priorities may cause increased stress levels. Work requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate computer keyboards at a moderate skill level.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
