Primary Purpose of the Position
The Managing Director of Financial Planning is a senior leadership role at the heart of our client experience. You will set the standard for planning excellence, lead and grow a team of CFP® professionals, and help build the infrastructure. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with our wealth advisors and leadership team — and directly with clients who expect and deserve the best.
Main Responsibilities
Planning Leadership
- Define the firm's financial planning philosophy, methodology, and service delivery standards
- Oversee comprehensive plans covering retirement, tax, estate, cash flow, insurance, and investment planning
- Lead planning on complex HNW/UHNW relationships including business succession, equity compensation, concentrated positions, charitable giving, and multi-generational wealth transfer
- Collaborate with clients outside advisors (CPAs, estate attorneys, business advisors) to deliver coordinated, holistic advice
Scalable Growth & Infrastructure
- Build the people, processes, and technology to scale to national firm.
- Design a tiered service model that delivers consistent, high-quality planning across client segments
- Partner with senior leadership on M&A integration, advisor recruiting, and team lift-outs
- Oversee planning software (eMoney and Vanilla) and developing standardized workflows, templates, and quality controls
Team Leadership
- Recruit, manage, train, and mentor a growing team of financial planners and planning associates
- Establish performance standards, career pathways, and professional development programs
- Foster a culture centered on client-first values, intellectual curiosity, and planning excellence
Business Partnership
- Integrate planning seamlessly into the firm's wealth advisory client service model
- Train and support advisors on planning concepts, tools, and client communication
- Represent the firm's planning capabilities in business development and prospective client meetings
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree required; MBA or Master's in Financial Planning preferred
- Certifications: CFP® required; CPA, CPWA®, PFS, CFA, or JD/LLM a strong plus
- Experience: 12–18 years in financial planning, with 5 years in a leadership role within an RIA, family office, or private wealth firm
- Technical Skills: Deep expertise in retirement, tax, and estate planning; proficiency in eMoney and Vanilla; familiarity with CRM platforms (Salesforce)
- Leadership: Proven ability to build and scale high-performing planning teams in a growth-stage environment
- Soft Skills: Executive presence, strong communicator, collaborative, fiduciary mindset, entrepreneurial
