Summary: Performs basic gardening activities required at residential or commercial locations, including mowing lawns, edging, pruning, planting, and basic irrigation repairs. Generally supervises a crew of 2-5 associates.

 

Responsibilities & Duties:

Safety – Enforce Safety/Security Rules:

  1. Communicate safety rules to the team, ensure the safety of others, observe safety rules, and report all work area accidents.
  2. Ensure safe transportation and appropriate use of equipment & supplies. Inspect equipment and report malfunctioning equipment. Train employees on gas/oil mixture, safety procedures, and VPS performance standards. Transport team safely from property to property and observe all traffic rules.
  3. Evaluate employee physical/mental condition.
  4. Mix chemical solutions (e.g., pesticides, weed killer, rodenticides, and fertilizers) per instructions.
  5. Protect client property and identify on-site safety hazards.
  6. Participate in required training programs (e.g., safety, chemical, equipment).
  7. Conduct mechanical vehicle inspections and submit weekly vehicle inspection sheets.
  8. Report problems to management (e.g., injury, supplies, equipment, etc.).

 

 

 

 

 

Prepare Daily Resources:

  1. Designate work assignments based on skill levels and prioritize maintenance activities.
  2. Motivate team and manage time. Choose appropriate break locations.
  3. Organize materials & equipment for daily/weekly use.
  4. Maintain clean work vehicles and trailers.

Train Employees:

  1. Observe new employee equipment skills/knowledge, explain work procedures to new employees, and train employees on equipment and supplies.
  2. Build team skills and manage the impact of team changes.
  3. Explain work procedures to supervisors and orient supervisors on on-site processes.

Provide Quality Service:

  1. Deliver consistent quality by prioritizing property activities and determining the course of action. Document all problems.
  2. Conduct monthly quality inspections with the supervisor.

Supervise On-Site Activities:

  1. Inspect property before and after service, including turf condition. Collect all tools and equipment after service.
  2. Perform basic gardening activities, manage on-site time, set work pace for the crew, and complete client punch list.
  3. Facilitate team consensus and evaluate employee performance. Manage scheduled breaks.
  4. Review client punch list with the supervisor, manage client problems.
  5. Diagnose technical problems and adjust/repair irrigation systems as needed and know the location of emergency shut-off connections, i.e., backflow/water meter.

 

 

 

  1. Determine when to alert the supervisor.
  2. Separate waste for disposal and remove waste from the site.
  3. Complete daily timesheet for self and crew.

Qualifications:

  1. Must have a working knowledge of the English and Spanish languages.
  2. Must have a valid California driver’s license, an insurable driving record, and qualify to drive a company vehicle.
  3. CLT Certification preferred.
  4. CPR and First Aid certified.

Experience:

  1. Must have at least one year of experience as a Landscape Gardener.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Irrigation controller programming.
  2. Recognizing and addressing component problems.
  3. Recognizing and documenting potential hazards.
  4. Recognizing drainage deficiencies and problem soil.
  5. Able to identify by common botanical name 25 common plants (bedding flowers, ground cover, shrubs/perennials, trees, and palms).
  6. Aesthetic and ornamental pruning of plants.
  7. Able to identify 10 frequently seen weeds.
  8. Able to identify 5 frequently seen pests.
  9. Establish relationships with clientele.
  10. Organizing, scheduling, and completing work routines.
  11. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with employees and management in a team environment.
  12. Able to pass VPS driving test. Must be able to drive a truck while towing a trailer.
