What are the responsibilities and job description for the Immigration Attorney position at Verde Law?
Verde Law, PLLC is an immigration law firm based in Miami, Florida, dedicated to helping immigrants and their families navigate the U.S. immigration system. We focus on humanitarian relief and removal defense — asylum, cancellation of removal, VAWA, U visas, and family-based petitions — representing people during some of the most difficult and high-stakes moments of their lives.
What sets us apart is how we treat our clients. Immigration cases are long, stressful, and deeply personal, and we believe every client deserves to feel informed, supported, and genuinely cared for at every step. We pair rigorous legal work with exceptional, compassionate client service, and we're looking for an attorney who shares that commitment.
The Role
We're seeking a skilled, dedicated, and compassionate Immigration Attorney to represent our clients in humanitarian and removal matters before the immigration courts (EOIR) and USCIS. You'll own your cases from strategy through resolution — developing legal theories, drafting and filing applications and briefs, preparing clients and witnesses, and advocating in hearings and interviews.
Just as importantly, you'll help set the standard for the warm, client-first service our firm is known for, and mentor the paralegals and staff who support your cases. For clients facing a slow and often frightening system, you are their advocate and their steady source of honest counsel. If you combine sharp legal judgment and strong advocacy skills with genuine empathy and a true service mindset, you'll thrive here.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Representation & Advocacy (the heart of this role)
- Represent clients in removal proceedings before EOIR, including master calendar hearings, individual/merits hearings, and bond hearings
- Represent clients before USCIS, including asylum and adjustment interviews
- Develop case strategy and legal theories for humanitarian and removal defense matters
- Conduct legal research and draft persuasive briefs, motions, and legal memoranda
- Prepare and file applications and petitions — I-589, EOIR-42B, VAWA self-petitions (I-360), U visas (I-918), family-based petitions (I-130), waivers, and related filings
- Prepare clients and witnesses to testify, and conduct direct and cross-examination at hearings
- Review and finalize declarations, applications, and supporting evidence prepared by the paralegal team
- Handle administrative appeals (BIA) and support federal court matters where appropriate
- Stay current on constantly evolving immigration law, regulations, and policy, and adjust case strategy accordingly
Client Counseling & Service
- Conduct case evaluations and counsel clients on their options, risks, and realistic outcomes in clear, plain language
- Build trusting relationships and communicate with empathy, patience, and professionalism in both English and Spanish
- Handle sensitive, emotional conversations — including with traumatized, detained, or anxious clients — with compassion, discretion, and a calm, reassuring presence
- Set and manage client expectations honestly, keeping clients informed at every stage of their case
- Treat every client like a person, not a case number
Leadership & Compliance
- Supervise and mentor paralegals and legal staff, reviewing their work for accuracy and quality
- Maintain the highest standards of professional ethics and Florida Bar compliance
- Accurately document case strategy, legal advice, and client interactions in the case file
- Manage a full caseload with diligence, organization, and consistent attention to deadlines
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
- Active membership in good standing with a U.S. state bar (Florida Bar preferred)
- Minimum 1 year of immigration law experience, with hands-on practice in both EOIR and USCIS matters
- Demonstrated experience with asylum, cancellation of removal, VAWA, or U visa cases
- Courtroom experience representing clients in removal proceedings
- Fluency in English and Spanish (spoken and written) — essential for serving our clients
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
- Outstanding client-counseling skills — warm, professional, and able to build rapport and trust quickly
- Empathy and emotional intelligence, with the ability to stay composed and kind during difficult or emotional conversations
- Sound legal judgment, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage a demanding caseload under deadlines
You'll Thrive Here If…
- You treat every client like a person, not a case number
- You combine rigorous lawyering with real compassion
- You're a confident advocate who stays calm, warm, and steady when the stakes are high
- You take real pride in being prepared, dependable, and following through
- You care deeply about helping immigrant communities
What We Offer
- A supportive, collaborative team that invests in your growth
- Modern, technology-forward systems that let you do your best work
- Meaningful work helping families and individuals build their futures
- Competitive compensation and performance bonuses
- Paid time off and holidays
- Health/Dental/Vision benefits
