What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-time teacher/Garden helper position at Vegetable Project?
The Vegetable Project seeks a part-time teacher/garden helper to work in its Albany, N.Y., schools garden program between five and 15 hours a week. This year-round position – paying $18 an hour – provides opportunity to create hands-on learning opportunities and make a difference in the lives of Albany kids.
The teacher/garden helper will participate in delivery of classroom programming during the school day, including starting seeds and caring for plants, leading students on touch-and-taste garden visits, and arranging produce handoffs to school cafeterias; and assisting with garden care during warmer months, including watering, weeding and managing compost. Times and days may vary from week to week, depending both on candidate’s availability on program scheduling.
With significant contact with students, the position would provide particular opportunity for individuals who are pursuing teaching or careers in other human services. The ideal candidate will be interested in – and ideally have some experience with – caring for plants or science or environmental stewardship or cooking or several of these.
Requirements are communications skills, and comfort with dirty hands and knees, and a desire to learn, learn, learn.

The mission of the Vegetable Project, a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, is to create hands-on learning opportunities for Albany children, and especially children with great needs, by building gardens, growing plants and harnessing the power of exposure to nature. We have gardens at and relationships with Myers Middle School and Albany High School. We are building programming at other Albany schools as well.
