Location: San Diego, California

Classification: Full-Time; Salaried/Exempt

Vault Bioventures sits at the intersection of innovation and healthcare, empowering our life science clients to unlock value by aligning opportunities with market needs. We work across healthcare industry segments, including Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology, and Medical Devices. Our practice areas include clinical development, medical affairs, commercialization, business development, business transformation, and digital customer engagement.

The Managing Consultant role sits above our Senior Consultant level and is the firm's first people-management tier within the consulting career path. In this role, you will simultaneously manage multiple client engagements, directly supervise and develop a small team of consultants and senior consultants, and take on a growing share of business development responsibility. You will report to a Director or Partner on each engagement while owning day-to-day delivery, quality, and client relationship management. This role suits someone ready to move from strong individual execution into leading people and accounts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engagement Management
  • Independently manage 2–3 concurrent client engagements spanning practice areas such as opportunity assessment, asset and portfolio strategy, commercial strategy, value proposition development, medical affairs, competitive scenario development, and patient services program design.
  • Own day-to-day delivery quality, timelines, and budget across assigned engagements, escalating appropriately to a Director or Partner.
  • Drive synthesis of complex data into actionable insights and executive-ready recommendations.
  • Team Management & Development
  • Directly supervise 2–3 consultants and senior consultants per engagement, assigning work, reviewing deliverables, and providing real-time coaching.
  • Own performance conversations and development planning for direct reports, in partnership with firm leadership.
  • Model high performance and accountability, and build a collaborative, high-integrity team culture.
  • Client Relationship Management
  • Build and sustain trusted, senior-level client relationships, with demonstrated ability to grow an account from a single engagement into a recurring, multi-project relationship.
  • Represent the firm in high-stakes client meetings, workshops, and advisory boards.
  • Business Development & Thought Leadership
  • Partner with leadership to identify and pursue new business with existing and prospective clients.
  • Lead or co-lead proposal development, client pitches, and scope definition, with a track record of converting proposals into signed engagements.
  • Contribute to intellectual capital and thought leadership materials that elevate the firm's market presence.
  • Market Research & Insights Generation
  • Design, conduct, and analyze primary market research, including stakeholder interviews with HCPs, payers, patients, and administrative staff, across US, EU, LatAm, and APAC markets.
  • Workshop & Meeting Facilitation
  • Design and facilitate high-impact client workshops, meetings, and advisory boards that produce actionable outcomes.
  • Develop compelling narratives and strategic frameworks for senior-stakeholder presentations.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of 6–8 years of life sciences consulting or relevant industry experience, including at least 2–3 years' operating at a senior consultant or manager level with direct supervisory responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience managing 2–3 concurrent client engagements while reporting to Director- or Partner-level leadership.
  • Proven people management experience, including direct oversight of consultants and/or senior consultants.
  • Track record of growing client accounts, from an initial engagement into a recurring or multi-year, multi-project relationship.
  • Established business development results, with a demonstrable history of proposal development and a strong win rate.
  • Excellent communication skills, including executive-level presentation, writing, and facilitation.
  • Technologically fluent across communication, data visualization, and collaboration tools.
  • Advanced degree (PhD, PharmD, MBA, or other relevant graduate degree) strongly preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% (domestic and international).
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without sponsorship.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using and building AI-enabled workflows, such as reusable prompts, research workflows, synthesis templates, knowledge management systems, automation tools, or unstructured data review approaches.
  • Hands-on experience designing and executing primary market research across international markets.
