The Vassalboro School Board seeks an experienced and student-centered educational leader to serve as full-time Superintendent of Schools for Vassalboro Community School (VCS), a PreK–8 public school serving more than 400 students in a supportive and engaged community.
Maine School Management Association has been engaged as the consultant in a search for excellent candidates. MSMA will assist the Vassalboro School Board in identifying and screening the candidates.
The School and District
Vassalboro Community School is a single-school PreK–8 district with a clear mission: to provide a caring learning community where all students can achieve success to their fullest potential. VCS emphasizes respect, responsibility, and kindness, creating a safe and effective environment that supports both academic and behavioral success.
The school serves 400 students and employs:
●55 teachers, administrators, and educational technicians
●18 support staff, including transportation, school nutrition professionals, administrative support, and custodial personnel
VCS offers a comprehensive academic program with a strong student support system and benefits from an active Parent–Teacher Organization and positive, collaborative relationships among the School Board, Budget Committee, and Town Select Board.
Technology and Learning Environment
VCS is well equipped to support innovative instruction, including:
•1:1 student devices at all grade levels
•Interactive displays in every regular classroom
•Telepresence robots for long-term remote student participation
•Five 3D printers available for student and staff use
School Choice and Secondary Education
Vassalboro offers school choice for grades 9–12. The town pays tuition for students to attend area public high schools or up to the state average tuition for secular independent schools. Historically, high school students attend Erskine Academy, Winslow High School, Waterville High School, and Cony High School, with many also enrolled in CTE (career and technical education) programs affiliated with their high school of choice.
The Position
The full-time superintendent will serve as the district’s chief executive officer and is responsible for educational leadership, personnel, finance, operations, and community relations in alignment with School Board policy and Maine law.
Desired Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
●Proven leadership experience at the superintendent or district level with a Maine Dept. of Education 010 certification (or demonstrate eligibility)
●Deep knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development and a strong ability to lead the Vassalboro School Department in this arena.
●Experience with ESSA grant program management
●An understanding of school funding and finance management
●A collaborative leadership style and excellent communication skills
●A commitment to student-centered decision-making
●Appreciation for school choice models and multi-school partnerships
