What We Look For In a Piano Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of piano technique including hand position, fingering, scales, arpeggios, chord voicings, sight-reading, music theory application, repertoire across classical and contemporary styles, and performance preparation. Ability to explain proper technique for tone production, pedaling, dynamics, and phrasing while preparing students for recitals, auditions, and graded music examinations.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching progressive technique development, musical interpretation, and practice strategies for piano. Guides students through learning proper hand position and posture, reading musical notation, practicing scales and arpeggios, interpreting dynamics and articulation, and preparing repertoire for performance. Emphasizes building musicianship alongside technical skill and connects piano study to music theory, composition, and ensemble participation.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with piano pedagogy methods and graded repertoire systems, and common challenges such as developing hand independence, building sight-reading fluency, and maintaining consistent practice habits. Adapts instruction using method books, repertoire selection matching student level and interests, and structured practice strategies to support students from absolute beginners through advanced pianists preparing for auditions and examinations.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
