TITLE: Summer Horticulture Assistant
LOCATION: Cascade Middle School, Covington Middle School, Frontier Middle School, Heritage High School, Mountain View High School
REPORTS TO: Program Instructor/CTE Administrator
Hours / Work Times
This position requires the assistant to tend to various agriculture items 3 days a week/up to 8 hours per day (maximum 24 hours per week) Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
This is a Summer Position: June 23, 2026 through August 24, 2026.
Position Duration: Temporary
Classification Group: Summer/Seasonal
Salary Placement: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the classification salary range. However, employees who have verified prior years of service of similar occupational experience may receive experience credit towards salary step placement.

SUMMARY STATEMENT:
Under the direction of the program instructor and CTE Administrator the Summer Horticulture Assistant is responsible for collecting data, cleaning, maintaining, watering, and securing the Heritage greenhouse and surrounding compound.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain the correct temperature in the greenhouse for maximum energy conservation.
- Water plants in the greenhouse.
- Water trees and berries around the greenhouse in coordination with other compound operations as instructed.
- Water and dead head plants as needed.
- Collect seeds.
- Stake and tie plants as needed.
- Weed the vegetable garden and other areas as instructed.
- Clean tank algae off of the fish tank glass.
- Change sock on fish tank filter every 2 weeks.
- Mix salt water and add to fish tank as needed.
- Check and fill automatic fish feeder.
- Report vandalism to program instructor and/or CTE administrator
- Other projects as identified by program instructor or CTE administrator.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT NECESSARY:
Power lawnmower, power weed-trimmer, miscellaneous hand tools for gardening, watering devices; hoses, nozzles, sprinklers
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with common tools used in gardening and yard maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and possess a positive attitude.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of plants and watering needs for greenhouse and outdoor plants.
- Ability to learn and understand greenhouse controls and temperatures.
- Ability to use time effectively and complete all tasks within time limits.
- Must be at least 18 years of age to meet federal and Washington State Labor and Industry requirements to operate cutting devices and power equipment.
