The Lead Print Maintenance Technician is the primary technical expert responsible for maintaining,
troubleshooting, and improving all production equipment across the facility—including offset presses,
digital presses, large-format presses, binding/finishing equipment, mailing equipment, and all auxiliary
systems.
This role is hands-on and highly collaborative. The Lead Technician will work directly with machine
operators, production supervisors, department managers, and equipment manufacturers to diagnose
issues early, maximize equipment uptime, implement preventive maintenance, and ensure every
machine is running at optimal performance and safety standards.
This position is both an individual contributor and the central point of accountability for maintenance
operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform mechanical repairs, adjustments, and maintenance on printing presses, bindery machines, cutters, folders, inserters, and finishing equipment.
- Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance and document all work performed.
- Diagnose mechanical, pneumatic, and basic electrical issues using manuals, schematics, and testing tools.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns to reduce production downtime.
- Calibrate, align, and set up equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
- Maintain inventory of tools, spare parts, and consumables; notify management when supplies need replenishment.
- Collaborate with operators to understand machine performance issues and recommend improvements.
- Follow all safety protocols and ensure equipment is operating safely and compliantly.
- Assist with installation, relocation, and commissioning of new or refurbished equipment.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and report ongoing issues or improvement opportunities.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- 3 years of mechanical maintenance experience, preferably in a commercial printing or manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of printing press mechanics (offset, flexo, digital) and/or bindery equipment.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, schematics, and service manuals.
- Basic electrical troubleshooting experience (switches, sensors, motors) preferred.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, precision measuring devices, and diagnostic equipment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a fast-paced production environment.
- Willingness to work overtime or off-shifts as needed.
- Experience with equipment brands such as Heidelberg, Komori, Manroland, HP Indigo, or Müller Martini preferred.
- Knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, and PLC-controlled equipment preferred.
- Maintenance experience in high-volume mail or print production environments preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Manufacturing/print production floor environment with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and ink/chemical materials.
- Physical exertion required, including walking, standing, stooping, lifting, climbing, and working with tools throughout the shift.
