The Custodian performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the custodial care of buildings.Employees in this class perform manual labor involving a variety of buildings custodial and maintenance tasks. Work involves the use of a variety of tools and light equipment. Work includes cleaning floors, vacuum and cleaning carpets, windows, bathrooms, replacing simple bulbs and paper supplies, building security and grounds maintenance. Employees may also serve as couriers for part of their duties. This position is subject to on-call hours, nights, weekends, and holidays for weather- related or work during off hours. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; 20 pounds of force frequently; and 10 pounds constantly, including the human body. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have the visual acuity to operate light equipment such as the vacuum cleaners and small trucks in a safe manner.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment. The employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals and human body fluids and thus is subject to OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens.

- Cleans buildings; vacuums, mops, sweeps, vacuums, dusts furniture, cleans restrooms and restroom fixtures; cleans windows, shampoos carpet, buffs and waxes floors, light landscaping such as: cutting grass and picking up debris on lawns and buildings.
- Stocks restrooms with paper products such as towels and tissue; stocks soap.
- Replaces light bulbs.
- Performs a variety of maintenance tasks such as sweeping sidewalks, shoveling snow off sidewalks, cleaning parking lots and porches; locks and unlocks buildings, sets up rooms for meetings and moves furniture; and hauling off trash.
- Defrosts refrigerators; cleans windows and walls; cleans coffee pots; washes out trash containers; cleans dishes.
- Serves as courier to pick up and deliver mail to/from the Post Office and deliver US mail and pick up and deliver interdepartmental mail to various County buildings and departments.
- Operates and cleans county vehicles.
- Raises and lowers flags.
- Sets up Meeting Rooms for all meetings.
- Maintains ready stock of janitorial supplies.
- Assist with basic building repair.
- May monitor security cameras; open doors and control heat/air in buildings by computer.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
- May require possession of a valid driver’s license.
- May require work on weekends, nights and holidays, such as weather-related problems, emergencies that comes up and or maintenance issues..
- May work offset hours as required to perform cleaning tasks to minimize the disruption of daily departmental operations.
- Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and custodial work.
- Knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in the cleaning of buildings.
- Knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
- Skill in communication.
- Skill in operating, maneuvering, and/or controlling the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Skill in planning and organizing daily work routine.
- Ability to prepare simple records of work activities.
