What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director for the Office of Multicultural Programs/Title IX Coordinator position at Valparaiso University?
The principal focus of this job is to support the mission of Valparaiso University by creating a
community of learning dedicated to excellence and grounded in the Lutheran tradition of
scholarship, freedom, and faith, to prepare students to lead and serve in both church and society.
The most important aspect of this position is to support students and retain targeted sub-
populations from historically underserved groups through the development, implementation,
and assessment of culturally affirming programs and services. It is expected that the successful
applicant will demonstrate a commitment to cultural diversity and the ability to work with
individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds.
The Assistant Director of Multicultural Programs will assist in developing and implementing
systems and programs that assist underrepresented students in their social/cultural development
process. The Assistant Director will have primary responsibility for the development and
implementation of educational and cultural programming. The Assistant Director of
Multicultural Programs will also supervise student staff and OMP student group structures while
serving as a resource for students in regard to their academic, personal, and social needs.
The Assistant Director of Multicultural Programs will serve as the University’s Title IX
Coordinator and administer any discrimination or Title IX claims by members of the University
community and assure the University’s processes and procedures related to such claims are in
compliance with the laws, and make amendments and recommendations when appropriate.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Master’s degree and two (2) years of experience in related fields.
- Experience working with students of underrepresented groups in Higher Education
- Experience coordinating campus programs and working with student groups
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience in creating and implementing multicultural training and programming
- Excellent judgment, decision making, and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
Preferred:
- Experience supervising graduate assistants and/or undergraduate students. Three (3) years of professional experience working with underrepresented students in higher education
- Preferred candidates shall be able to demonstrate having sound skills and experience in the area of communication (oral and written), program planning and implementation, supervision, assessment, and evaluation.
- Experience in higher education and/or employment law
- Ability to conduct complex legal and factual research
Responsibilities:
Assist the Director to serve as a resource for students to develop a healthy environment in regard to academic, personal, and social needs.
- Assist the Director to oversee student staff, and student groups under the Office of Multicultural Programs.
- Assist the Director in developing and maintaining programs for targeted subpopulations.
- Serve as a resource for underrepresented students in regard to academic, personal, and social needs.
- Serve as an advisor to student groups and support faculty advisors for all student groups.
- Develop and implement student officer training with an intentional focus on identity. development, leadership skill-building, and position-specific development.
- Facilitate individual student and leadership development for student group executive officers.
- Attend student meetings and events to support overarching group goals.
- Assist and serve as a chaperone for after-hour and weekend activities on and off-campus including potential travel to student conferences.
- Guide the OMP and OMP student organizations in the effective process of the program proposal, execution, and evaluation.
- Oversee legal matters related to student life and student matters.
- Assure University compliance with FERPA.
- Provide consultation related to the administration of all processes and procedures related to complaints against students.
- Review all policies related to such processes and procedures to assure compliance with the laws and make amendments and recommendations when appropriate.
Serve as the University’s Title IX Coordinator
- Administer any discrimination or Title IX claims by members of the University community.
- Assure the University’s processes and procedures related to such claims are in compliance with the laws, and make amendments and recommendations when appropriate.
- Train members of the University community on Title IX and anti-discrimination laws and policies
- Assure University compliance with the Clery Act.
- Work with the University’s Police and other University personnel on Clery reporting requirements and conduct training when appropriate.
- Aid the University Police in the drafting and posting of the University’s annual security report
- Develops, implements, coordinates and conducts educational programs and initiatives designed to educate and support faculty, staff, and students regarding their rights and, where applicable, obligations under Title IX, including reporting options/ responsibilities, support services, University policy and applicable disciplinary code, grievance procedures, confidential sources, etc.
- Facilitates resolutions to supervisor-employee conflicts and administers the University’s EthicsPoint system (process to report unethical or illegal behaviors by employees).
- Work with Human Resources to update their annual employee discrimination questionnaire, incorporate the Policy into the questionnaire, and assure the questionnaire is consistent with the Policy. Also, be generally available to the Valparaiso University community to answer questions related to discrimination, harassment, and the Policy.
Implement, direct, and maintain social programs, scholarship programs, and program evaluation
and reporting for targeted student populations.
- Assist the Director to develop and implement new programs to directly confront retention disparity.
- Assist the Director to develop, implement and support programs, initiatives and activities to encourage underrepresented students to persist through graduation.
- Assist the Director to maintain and develop scholarship programs and requisite funding for their continuation.
- Assist the Director to create educational and cultural programs for the office including conversation series and speaker series
Develop and maintain strategic partnerships university and community wide to advance the mission of the OMP and support a robust student experience for the targeted populations.
- Assist the Director to advance the work delineated in the Action Agenda for Racial Equity and Inclusion
- Assist the Director to develop and maintain strategic partnerships university and community-wide to advance the mission of the OMP and support a robust student experience for the targeted populations.
- Assist the OMP director with the implementation of Diversity Equity and Inclusion
- Activities on Campus
- Assist the Director to develop the content to train students and staff with regards to inclusivity, microaggressions, bias, stereotypes, cultural relevancy, and other diversity issues facing organizations that affect the experience of students, faculty, and staff on campus.
- Assist the Director to monitor and promote involvement in student activities and/or student group participation for underrepresented students
- Assist the Director in monitoring the level of satisfaction among underrepresented students, promoting change when needed.
- Assist the Director with the implementation of campus wide inclusion training and education.
