The Personal Trainer position at the Valley Shore YMCA offers safe, effective, and engaging one-on-one and small-group fitness training. Personal Trainers design individualized programs that help members of all ages and fitness levels achieve their health and wellness goals while fostering a supportive, motivating, and inclusive environment that builds community.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
•    Conduct initial assessments and design individualized fitness programs to meet each member’s goals and abilities.
•    Actively grow and maintain a satisfied client base through effective program delivery, relationship-building, and member engagement.
•    Track client progress and maintain accurate records of workouts, visits, and program outcomes to support billing and reporting.
•    Stay current on fitness trends, certifications, and best practices in exercise programming, CPR, First Aid, and AED.
•    Collaborate with team members, demonstrating professionalism, a positive attitude, and a member-focused approach.
•    Contribute to the cleanliness, organization, and overall maintenance of the Wellness Center.
•    Build and support positive, collaborative relationships with volunteers, members, participants, staff, and colleagues.
•    Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
•    Follow all Valley Shore YMCA and applicable regulatory procedures and standards. 
•    Perform other related duties and special projects assigned.
 

QUALIFICATIONS
•    Minimum age of 18.
•    Education: High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field preferred.
•    Certifications: 
1)    Nationally recognized Personal Training certification required (AFAA, ACE, NSCA, NASM, or ACSM).
2)    Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are required within 30 days of hire.
3)    Completion of YMCA-specific training within the first 90 days of hire.
•    Skills and Experience: 
1)    Comprehensive knowledge of fitness trends, exercise science, biomechanics, anatomy, nutrition, injury prevention, and physical education principles, with a commitment to ongoing professional development and maintaining current certifications.
2)    Demonstrated expertise in strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and overall health and wellness programming, with experience applying these principles in real-world fitness or gym environments.
3)    Ability to create individualized fitness programs, adapt exercises for diverse populations, and coach clients toward achieving measurable fitness goals.
4)    Proficiency in the safe operation and routine maintenance of fitness equipment.
5)    Prior experience in personal training, fitness instruction, wellness coaching, or customer service preferred.
6)    Strong people skills with the ability to connect and communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups across all social and economic backgrounds.
•    Commitment to professional development and staying current on certifications and fitness trends.
•    Must successfully pass a background check.
•    Understanding of inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
•    Completion of YMCA-specific training within the first 90 days of hire.

•    Required to perform all physical aspects of the role, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting equipment (up to 45 lbs.), and leading participants during sessions.
•    The work environment typically has moderate noise levels, including the sounds of children’s laughter and play.
