What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Technician position at Valley Internet?
Location: Lake & Napa Counties, CA (Field-based) Type: Full-time
We've spent over 20 years bringing reliable internet to the farms, ranches, and rural homes across Solano, Napa, and Lake counties that other providers have overlooked. Now we're expanding into IoT solutions that help our customers protect their property, manage water resources, track assets, and stay safe during wildfire season.
We're looking for a hands-on, resourceful Field Technician to join our small team. If you like solving problems outdoors, working with wireless and networking equipment, and making a real difference for the communities you serve, this might be your kind of job.
No two days are the same. You might be:
- Surveying a new customer site on a remote hilltop, then designing and installing their wireless link
- Servicing a base station miles off the main road, accessible only by ATV
- Running and terminating low-voltage cabling through attics, crawlspaces, and rooftops
- Deploying IoT sensors that alert ranchers to wildfire conditions or help vintners manage irrigation
- Troubleshooting network issues for customers and keeping them connected
- Maintaining trucks, tools, and equipment so everything is ready when you need it
You'll represent Valley Internet with every interaction, so professionalism and good communication matter just as much as technical skill.
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and pride in doing quality work
- Good communication skills with both customers and teammates
- Quick learner who takes feedback well and looks for ways to improve processes
- Basic networking, computer, and hands-on construction/craftsmanship skills
- Valid driver's license with a clean record
- Comfortable with physical work: lifting up to 80 lbs, climbing ladders and rooftops, working in tight spaces and varying weather
- Willing to drive off-road, handle ATVs, and participate in occasional weekend on-call rotations
- High school diploma required; college coursework or prior field/technical experience preferred
This isn't a cubicle job. You'll work outdoors across some of the most beautiful terrain in Northern California, with real autonomy and variety in your day. You'll also have room to grow.
Training & Growth: Specialized training opportunities including tower climbing and drone operation certification. Clear paths into leadership or engineering roles.
Benefits: Unlimited PTO (with manager approval), health and dental insurance, company-sponsored 401(k), a MacBook for work, and cell phone and home internet reimbursements for qualifying employees. Regular performance reviews with annual and milestone-based salary evaluations.
- We're a small, flexible team that takes the work seriously but keeps things supportive and human. If that sounds like your kind of environment, we'd love to hear from you.
