Job Description
The Director, Ambulatory Pharmacy Services is responsible for the oversight, operational integrity, regulatory/legal compliance and financial performance for all Ambulatory/Outpatient pharmacy programs including Community, Specialty, and Ambulatory Practice sites. This candidate will provide direction in Ambulatory/Outpatient Pharmacy to include business development, operations management, clinical services, and pharmacy procurement/inventory management. The Director, Ambulatory Pharmacy Services in concert with the Senior Director, Pharmacy Services, develops the strategy for new Ambulatory Pharmacy program development and implementation across the system.
Responsibilities and Duties
Assures highly reliable, safe pharmacy operations at all Valley Health outpatient pharmacies, including the safe and effective implementation and utilization of technology and automation as appropriate.
Develops and implements policies and procedures across the outpatient pharmacy system to ensure compliance with State and Federal Regulations, accreditation standards and third-party payer requirements for the purpose of minimizing risk and exposure. This includes accreditation and licensing requirements and formal professional standards pertaining to drug distribution, utilization and control.
Reviews and manages all safety concerns identified relative to outpatient pharmacy services using a just culture approach.
Develops and implements pharmacy services that are patient- and family-centered consistent with VH values.
Promotes and rewards a culture of high quality and courteous care that is aimed at maximizing the patient’s experience.
Identifies the needs within the VH system for expansion and improvement of outpatient pharmacy services. Coordinates the development and directs the implementation of new programs and services.
Identifies opportunities and prepares business plans to further enhance pharmacy services by expansion of the 340B program. Works collaboratively with the Senior Director, Pharmacy and 340B team.
Actively participates in the strategic planning process for the Department of Pharmacy representing Ambulatory Pharmacy program development opportunities. Takes ownership for strategic directions and objectives assigned for the growth and development of all Ambulatory Pharmacy Services systemwide.
Oversight responsibility for recruitment and retention of staff for outpatient pharmacy programs, including interview, hiring, training and supervision processes.
Assures the provision of timely and fair feedback and evaluation for employees.
Oversight and management responsibilities relating to budget performance for all Ambulatory Pharmacy operations.
Contributes to the creation of the annual operating budget for all Ambulatory Pharmacy operations including business improvement and cost reduction targets.
Works collaboratively with Senior Director, Pharmacy and the 340B team to evaluate and optimize growth and 340B opportunities.
Develop plans related to the upgrade and maintenance of facilities, equipment, automation and other components of the infrastructure necessary to support outpatient pharmacy operations.
Develops and implements new programs throughout the system to expand pharmacy services in primary care and specialty areas.
Performs Other Related Duties As Required.
Education
Bachelors in Pharmacy or PharmD is required.
Residency, Masters Or Equivalent Education/experience Is Required.
Completion of ASHP accredited residency is preferred.
Experience
3-5 years of appropriate acute care pharmacy experience is required.
Minimum of 4 years of leadership experience with relevant experience is required.
Certification & Licensures
Licensed as a Pharmacist in Virginia or licensure eligibility is required.
Qualifications
Strong understanding of accreditation standards as they relate to medication safety management.
Thorough working knowledge of pharmacy operations, processes and policies appropriate to hospital setting.
Understands performance improvement mechanisms and data collection.
Demonstrates strong communication, organizational and planning skills.
