The individual selected for this role will be placed at the specific tier and salary range that directly aligns with their demonstrated education, prior casework or law enforcement experience, and Idaho POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certification status.Typical Duties & Responsibilities
The Adult Misdemeanor Probation Officer serves as a vital link between the judicial system, law enforcement agencies, community service providers, and the public. Depending on the level at which the candidate is hired, key responsibilities include:
  • Evidence-Based Case Management: Conducting background investigations, utilizing validated risk/needs assessment tools, and constructing targeted case plans to guide probationers toward successful rehabilitation.
  • Judicial Support & Reporting: Attending court proceedings, preparing detailed legal filings and pre-sentence reports, and providing accurate, objective verbal testimony and sentencing recommendations.
  • Client Engagement & Monitoring: Conducting office visits, enforcing court-mandated conditions, facilitating treatment enrollment, overseeing drug/alcohol screenings, and managing client compliance technology (GPS and ignition interlock systems).
  • Community & Interagency Collaboration: Partnering with local law enforcement, treatment facilities, and community organizations to strengthen public safety initiatives and reduce recidivism.
  • Field Operations & Safety: Executing property searches with law enforcement assistance, conducting out-of-county courtesy supervision, and participating in a 24/7 emergency response rotation.

Valley County encourages applications from candidates possessing a background in criminal justice, law enforcement, social work, psychology, sociology, court administration, or related fields. The candidate selected will be placed into one of the following four tiers based on their qualifications:
  • Probation Officer Recruit: For entry-level candidates holding an Associate degree in a related field (or equivalent experience) who demonstrate a strong foundation in human behavior, critical thinking, and conflict de-escalation. Recruits work under close supervision while completing structured training to obtain their Idaho POST Basic Probation Officer Certification within their first year.
  • Probation Officer 1: For full-journey officers holding an active Idaho POST Basic Probation Officer Certification (or out-of-state equivalent eligible for lateral transfer) and at least one year of probation or casework experience. Incumbents independently manage standard misdemeanor caseloads, perform field enforcement duties with assistance, and participate in on-call rotations.
  • Probation Officer 2: For advanced officers holding an Idaho POST Intermediate Probation Officer Certification and three or more years of progressive corrections experience. Incumbents manage complex or higher-risk caseloads, demonstrate proficiency in Motivational Interviewing, and lead community outreach initiatives.
  • Probation Officer 3: For senior master practitioners holding an Idaho POST Advanced Probation Officer Certification and five or more years of comprehensive probation experience. Incumbents manage the department's most complex cases, deliver peer training, provide technical coaching, and represent Valley County on regional boards and committees.
