JOB TITLE:  

WPM Environment Reporter

JOB PURPOSE:   

This position covers environmental reporting in Wyoming, with a focus on radio, print, video and, digital reporting.

This position is grant funded and considered at-will employment. 

This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming’s Employee Handbook. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closures based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research and report on environmental issues that are pertinent to Wyoming and reflect its role and involvement in state, national, and global arenas.  Monitor and report on implication of natural resources/energy on the economy and livability issues in Wyoming.   Create news reports, features, and research that can be accessed across multiple platforms including radio  online (including video), and print  Meet national criteria in terms of quality and quantity.
  • Coordinating  with the News Managing Editor, contribute to WPM’s natural resources/energy online/digital activity, ensuring that content is posted with audio, graphics, interpretive charts and video.  Write material for articles, and coordinate with publication editors. 
  • Moderate  chats and related social media and in-person activities that support the network’s outreach role in environmental reporting, focusing on  natural resources, energy, and their effects on Wyoming.  Organize and lead discussions and forums in conjunction with senior news staff.
  • Collaborate with state and national entities to submit content across multiple platforms and ensure that Wyoming’s stories are disseminated nationally and globally.
  • Provide general reporting as needed; anchor network news, as assigned.  
  • Engage in podcast activity related to wildlife, animals, and American National Park activity as assigned. Bring both creative and production skills to the WPM podcast initiatives.
  • Participate in management meetings; track activity for reports to granting funders, contribute to creating persuasive grant applications focusing on natural resources and energy.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in station management and assist in news coverage and live or taped events.
  • Provide coverage for air shifts in the absence of other broadcast personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental-related field

Experience: Three years experience in environmental, broadcast or writing disciplines.

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements: 

  • Valid driver's license
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Experience working with NPR broadcast entity's.
  • Expert level knowledge on environmental issues.
  • Expert experience in using broadcast equipment.
  • Proven ability to report in audio and video formats.
  •  Proven expertise in social media

On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work on campus.
