Utility Services Group, Inc. (USG) specializes in underground infrastructure inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation, and trenchless repair. As USG enters an important new chapter as an independent and growing company, we are seeking an experienced, hands-on Assistant Controller to help build and strengthen our financial operations.
This is more than a traditional accounting position. The Assistant Controller will work directly with the General Manager and company leadership to improve USG’s financial reporting, accounting systems, internal controls, job-cost visibility, and financial decision-making. We are intentionally seeking someone who can grow into USG’s future Controller and, over time, become a key member of the company’s leadership team.
Assistant Controller - Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and maintain accurate financial records, journal entries, general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and monthly financial reports.
- Help lead month-end and year-end close processes, including accruals, reconciliations, general ledger review, financial statement preparation, variance analysis, and management reporting.
- Support the transition and development of USG’s independent accounting operations, financial reporting structure, processes, documentation, and internal controls.
- Review payroll for accuracy, proper authorization, compliance, labor allocation, and job-cost coding, and coordinate with internal team members and third-party payroll providers.
- Maintain, optimize, and expand the effective use of Vista ERP, including financial reporting, job-cost reporting, workflow efficiency, data integrity, and user adoption.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow planning, financial analysis, and scenario modeling to help company leadership make informed business decisions.
- Manage and improve construction and project-based accounting activities, including job costing, work-in-progress reporting, revenue recognition, project cost tracking, equipment costing, and project-profitability analysis.
- Partner with Operations and Project Management to review job performance, identify cost or billing concerns, improve financial accountability, and resolve discrepancies.
- Develop financial dashboards, key performance indicators, and management reports that improve visibility into projects, service lines, equipment, and overall company performance.
- Support fixed-asset accounting, fleet and equipment cost tracking, capital-expenditure reporting, and asset-related financial controls.
- Help establish, document, maintain, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls that promote accuracy, consistency, compliance, and accountability.
- Assist with annual audits, tax preparation, insurance renewals, bonding requirements, banking relationships, lender reporting, and other external financial requests, as applicable.
- Supervise and support accounting and office team members while helping develop the structure and capabilities of USG’s future accounting department.
- Identify and implement process improvements, reporting enhancements, automation opportunities, and technology solutions that improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Provide financial insight and recommendations that help leadership manage risk, improve profitability, and support continued company growth.
- Protect confidential employee, payroll, banking, company, and financial information.
Salary : $115,000 - $125,000
