Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Machine Operator to join our pipe construction team. This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment to install and maintain underground utility piping systems, including water, sewer, and storm drains. The Machine Operator will work closely with the crew to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate completion of projects in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, loaders, trenchers, and skid steers to dig trenches, lift materials, and place pipes.
- Follow project plans, blueprints, and site layouts to ensure precise excavation and pipe installation.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections, perform basic maintenance, and report mechanical issues.
- Work in coordination with ground crew to safely load, align, and secure pipes.
- Ensure all work complies with OSHA regulations, company safety standards, and local codes.
- Monitor worksite for hazards and participate in ongoing safety meetings.
- Assist with site preparation, grading, and cleanup as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment hours.
- Operate machinery in varying weather conditions and terrain.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 2–3 years of machine operation experience in pipe construction or underground utility work.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred).
- Equipment operation certification (preferred).
- Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
- Strong understanding of trench safety and shoring requirements.
- Good communication skills and teamwork mindset.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors for extended periods.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor construction environment with exposure to varying weather.
- Work may involve extended hours, weekends, or overtime based on project needs.
- Requires use of PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, and hearing protection.
