in freshwater and marine systems within the Phillips Lab at The University of
Southern Mississippi. The Research Technician V in Environmental DNA is
responsible for designing and validating species-specific Droplet Digital PCR
(ddPCR) assays; coordinating and conducting eDNA field surveys; performing
advanced molecular laboratory analyses; conducting detection-limit and related
quantitative analyses; and contributing to technical reports and peer-reviewed
publications. This position operates with significant independence in both
laboratory and field settings and provides advanced technical expertise in
molecular ecology methodologies. This position is contingent upon continued
grant funding.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Principal Investigator (PI) to plan, coordinate, and execute laboratory and field-based research activities related to environmental DNA studies.
- Designs, develops, optimizes, and validates species-specific ddPCR assays for target organisms.
- Coordinates and conducts eDNA field surveys, including water sample collection, filtration, site documentation, and field data management in freshwater and marine environments.
- Performs laboratory processing and analysis of eDNA samples, including DNA extraction, ddPCR setup and analysis, quality control procedures, contamination mitigation, and quantitative data analysis (e.g., LOD/LOQ assessments).
- Maintains detailed laboratory notebooks, metadata records, and organized digital data systems to ensure research integrity, compliance, and reproducibility.
