Responsibilities
- The Medical Technologist professional responsibility within their scope of practice:
- Abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values.
- Adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality.
- Requires regular and prompt attendance.
- Works the assigned schedule including overtime and call as required
- Maintains expertise.
- Participates in continuing education activities.
- Participates in proficiency testing program(s).
- Teaches instrument operation or procedures to Clinical Laboratory Science students or new employees as assigned.
- The Medical Technologist patient care/department responsibilities:
- Requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care/essential functions.
- Utilizes proper body mechanics when:
- Moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety
- Moving equipment/supplies that is necessary to perform essential functions
- Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
- Follows standard procedures to perform routine. timed and STAT moderate and complex laboratory tests.
- Recognizes deviation from expected results.
- Analyzes and corrects problems maintaining written or computer documentation.
- Reports all critical values following laboratory protocol.
- Maintains instruments by performing maintenance procedures and calibration.
- Operates and utilizes necessary programs on LIS, HIS or PC.
- Draws blood specimens from patients.
- Monitors the work pending Jog of designated section and document action taken.
- Maintains a neat and efficient work area by cleaning bench tops, equipment/instrument and replenishing supplies in a timely manner.
- Follows procedures for hazardous waste management.
- The Medical Technologist communication responsibilities:
- Communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone.
- Responds to overhead pages
- The Medical Technologist documentation responsibilities:
- Maintains accurate and complete records by:
- Analyzing quality control data, evaluating the results and taking appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
- Documenting results or actions in writing or by computer .
- Documenting customer complaints, testing or reporting errors and presenting each lo supervisor for corrective action .
- The Medical Technologist citizenship responsibilities:
- Accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict.
- Cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the unit.
- Completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements.
- Utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job.
- Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards.
- The responsibilities for providing age specific care:
- Demonstrates the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient populations:
- Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adults, Geriatric
- Neonate, Infant-Toddler/Preschool, School age/Adolescent, Reproductive Age, Post/Peri Menopausal
- OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Other duties as assigned/required.
- Participates on committees as assigned.
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities through quality measurement or participation of ICARE process as assigned.
- Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
- Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards

Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree major course work in Medical Technology from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama Required
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)-American Medical Technologists Registry eligible with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Medical Technologist Required or
- Certified Medical Lab Scientist-ASCP Required
- Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
