Responsibilities
- Provides professional nursing care to patients in a variety of outpatient clinic settings in the Pediatric Cardiology Division
- Participates in direct patient care activities under the supervision of a provider or advanced practitioner
- Assesses health status by completing a nursing assessment
- Educates patients about medication and special diets, preparing, and administering medication as directed, symptom management, and providing additonal information related to community resources.
- The Clinic RN can send new or refills for prescriptions as directed, performs in office procedures within scope, assists with wound care and dressing changes as directed by overseeing provider, medication administration, in office spirometry, assist with administering screening questionnaires, venipuncture or point of care laboratory testing. hearing or vision screening, obtianing vital signs and additioanl in office testing as needed for the specialty.
- Contacts the pateint/caregiver/family for all results adn provides further education as directed by the ordering/overseeing provider. Documents all pateint interaction efficiently within the electronic medical record.
- The Clinic RN can start an IV and administer fluids as ordered by the overseeing provider.
- Performs telephone symptom triage and assessment. Uses standing orders and approved protocols to education and guide patients based on assessments.
- Uses standing orders and protocols to review pateint results and provide instruction under the direction of a phshcian or advanced practitioner.
- The Clinic RN will be resonsible for reviewing all incoming results for urgency and abnormality and escalate the provider for immediate attention.
- Collaborates with care team to ensure smooth and effective transitions of care
- Prepares or supervises preparation of clinic rooms and equipment for use as well as supports supplies ordering by maintaining inventories and participate as directed.
- Assists with specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
- Assists with specialized patient care equipment as required by the clinical department and medical specialty assigned
- Administers medications and treatments as ordered by provider and monitors patients for response
- Initiates CPR and other emergency measures per protocol
- Covers other nursing roles within the department
- Provides health education to patients and families
- Assists in preparation of the department-specific education for patients and colleagues
- Performs or delegates administrative duties such as understanding office computer applications, answering phones, welcoming patients, updating, and filing patient medical records, completing insurance forms, scheduling appoints and handling correspondence; arranges and schedules hospital admissions and other ancillary services and referrals to other providers
- Basic coding and filling of insurance forms and conducting preauthorization work and obtaining appropriate certifications
- Participates in quality initiatives, process improvements, and research activities to improve patient outcomes, patient experience, and patient safety
- Maintains professional growth and development in the nursing field and identified annual core competencies
- Maintains patient records
- Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
- Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
- Regular and prompt attendance
- Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
- Related duties as assigned

Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing meeting the minimum standard set by the state of Alabama Required
- Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
