The Director of Physician Relations is a field-based business development professional responsible for cultivating and expanding referral relationships between optometrists, primary care physicians, and other eye care providers and our ophthalmology practice(s). This role serves as the primary liaison between the practice and the referring community, driving patient referral volume across all service lines, including medical and surgical ophthalmology, retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, and refractive surgery.

This is a high-visibility, externally facing role requiring exceptional interpersonal skills, clinical fluency, and a self-directed work ethic. The Director will spend the majority of their time in the field, making in-person calls on optometric and medical offices throughout the assigned territory. The Director will oversee 3 referral coordinators, who handle scheduling and other related back-office functions for the department.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Referral Development & Account Management

  • Conduct regular in-person office visits to optometrists, primary care physicians, and other referring providers across an assigned geographic territory, as directed by VP of Operations
  • Build and maintain a structured call cycle for existing and potential new referring offices
  • Educate referring providers and their staff on the practice's clinical capabilities, sub-specialties, surgeons, and patient care protocols
  • Present new service lines, technology advancements, and clinical updates to referring offices
  • Coordinate potential educational events, if applicable
  • Identify new referral opportunities and develop a strategic outreach plan


Relationship Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and relationship owner for all key referring offices
  • Proactively resolve referral friction points, including scheduling delays, communication gaps, and co-management concerns
  • Respond to inquiries and/or concerns in a timely manner and troubleshoot patient or process-related issues
  • Facilitate warm hand-offs and ensure referring providers receive timely consultation notes and post-operative summaries
  • Gather and relay referring provider feedback to internal clinical and administrative leadership to continually improve the referral experience
  • Represent the practice at local and regional optometry society meetings, community, and professional networking events


Data & Analytics

  • Track and report referral volume by provider and by visit/surgery type
  • Monitor referral trends and develop targeted recovery strategies, when applicable
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date database of referring providers, contact information, office hours and call history
  • Provide weekly activity reports, including visits completed, new referral relationships established, and referral outcomes
  • Analyze territory performance against established KPIs and benchmarks; present findings to leadership


Internal Collaboration

  • Work closely with operations directors, surgeons, and clinical staff to align outreach messaging with operational capacity
  • Collaborate with the marketing team on collateral development, digital campaigns, and event planning, if applicable
  • Participate in regular team meetings and strategy sessions with leadership
  • Oversee referral coordinators and collaborate with Patient Care Counselors (PCCs) to ensure a seamless patient journey from referral to post-op.


PERFORMANCE METRICS & KPI's

Success in this role will be measured by the following indicators:

  • Monthly and quarterly referral volume growth by provider and service line
  • Number of completed field visits per week
  • New referring provider accounts activated per quarter
  • Retention rate of existing referring accounts
  • Referral-to-appointment conversion rate


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required; major in healthcare administration, business, communications, or a related field preferred


Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in physician relations, healthcare sales, or business development in an ambulatory or specialty care setting
  • Prior experience calling on optometrists or within the ophthalmology, optometry, or vision care industry preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of growing referral volume


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of the optometry-ophthalmology co-management model and referral dynamics preferred
  • Familiarity with common ophthalmic conditions, surgical procedures (cataract, LASIK/PRK, glaucoma, retina), and diagnostic terminology preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; able to engage clinicians and administrative staff with equal ease
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage a large referral base and prioritize independently
  • Comfortable working autonomously in a field-based environment with minimal day-to-day supervision
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Primarily field-based; must be able to travel throughout the assigned territory up to 80% of the time, including daily driving between provider offices
  • In-office presence when not out on the field
  • Occasional evening or weekend commitments for networking or educational events
  • Must be able to carry and transport marketing materials, equipment, and educational collateral
  • Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods during office visits and events
