Position Summary
Urban Social Services and Advocacy (USSA) is seeking an experienced Part-Time Grant Writer to help secure funding that supports programs serving underserved and justice-involved communities in Los Angeles County. This position works directly with the CEO and leadership team to identify funding opportunities, develop strategic grant concepts, and craft compelling proposals that support USSA’s expanding programs in housing support, recuperative care, community health, reentry services, and social service advocacy.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer with a proven track record of successful grant funding, who can translate program ideas and community needs into persuasive narratives that align with funder priorities. This is an on-site role designed to allow close collaboration with leadership to develop new program concepts and funding strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Strategy & Development
- Work directly with the CEO to develop funding strategies and program concepts aligned with USSA’s mission and growth priorities.
- Identify and research potential grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
- Develop and write letters of inquiry (LOIs), grant proposals, and funding applications.
Proposal Writing
- Craft compelling narratives describing USSA’s programs, community impact, and organizational capacity.
- Translate program ideas into data-driven, funder-aligned proposals.
- Ensure all proposals meet funder guidelines, deadlines, and submission requirements.
Collaboration & Information Gathering
- Work closely with the CEO, program leadership, and administrative staff to gather program information, budgets, and outcome metrics.
- Assist in shaping new program ideas into fundable initiatives.
Grant Tracking & Reporting
- Maintain a grant calendar tracking deadlines, submissions, and reporting requirements.
- Support preparation of grant reports and impact updates required by funders.
- Maintain organized records of submissions, proposals, and funding outcomes.
Research & Relationship Development
- Conduct ongoing research on philanthropic trends and funding opportunities.
- Assist in cultivating relationships with current and prospective funders when appropriate.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of successful grant writing experience.
- Demonstrated track record of securing grant funding from foundations, corporations, or government agencies.
- Experience writing proposals in the nonprofit or social services sector.
Writing & Research Skills
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Ability to translate complex program information into clear, compelling narratives.
Collaboration
- Ability to work directly with executive leadership and program staff.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and online grant submission portals.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and maintain organized records.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree is not required for this position.
Candidates must instead demonstrate:
- At least three years of successful grant writing experience, and
- A portfolio of previous grant writing work or proposal samples.
Work Environment
- This position requires on-site work to facilitate collaboration with the CEO and program leadership.
- Flexible part-time schedule based on grant deadlines and organizational needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Los Angeles County philanthropic and government funding landscape.
