Internal Medicine Assistant

 The Internal Medicine (IM) Assistant is the Internists primary medical support. They aid the Internist and technician in achieving greater efficiency by assisting with endoscopic procedures and relieving them of some administrative detail.  They have a very significant role in communicating with and educating clients about their pets.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

·       Minimum age of 18 years.

·       Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are    stressed, ill or in pain.

·       Detail oriented and willing to complete training and care of very sensitive endoscopy equipment

            · Ability to set scope of for procedures

            · Comfortable disassembling and cleaning endoscopes

            · Able to problem-solve or trouble-shoot potential problems with equipment

·       Comfort with anesthesia 

·       Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.

·       Is well spoken and approaches their job duties in a mature nature.

·       Has experience working in a team environment and works well with all levels of hospital team members.

·       Has excellent client communication skills.  IM clients can be very demanding, requiring understanding and empathy. 

·       Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs).   Walks or stands for extended periods or time; frequently works in a bent position.

·       Working conditions:  May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.

Patient and Client Care

·       Assist in IM appointments and procedures

• Help admit and discharge patients according to hospital policy
• Monitor patient under anesthesia
• Placing IV catheters, giving premeds
• Recovering patients from anesthesia

·       Prepare accurate estimates for IM procedures

·       Learn how to care for endoscopy equipment

• Responsible for daily cleaning and care of equipment
• For a relationship with ESS for handling any repairs

·    In addition to all above, may be asked to help on the floor as needed or when the IM schedule is light.  

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

A starting range is an hourly rate of $22 - $28, commensurate with individual qualifications for this position.
