The Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center is seeking a Maintenance Worker to join our team. This position is a terrific opportunity for someone to gain additional experience and make a difference in the lives of our clients.
For over 45 forty-five years, our organization has provided mental health and holistic services in northern Manhattan for families, children, adolescents, and other adults including the elderly in a supportive and caring environment. We also have an out-patient and residential substance abuse program as well as a Therapeutic Preschool for 3-5 year olds.
Upper Manhattan Mental Health Center is a Certified National Health Service Corps (NHSC) site.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Maintenance Worker
Location: ABLE House 168 East 107th St., New York, NY 10029
Department: ABLE House
Hours: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 35hr./wk.
Union: Union position
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine building maintenance and repairs, including carpentry, painting, patching, and minor renovations
- Conduct basic electrical work, such as replacing outlets, switches, fixtures, and troubleshooting minor issues
- Perform basic plumbing repairs, including fixing leaks, replacing faucets, clearing drains, and toilet repairs
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repair needs
- Conduct regular inspections of the facility to identify maintenance or safety issues
- Maintain tools, equipment, and maintenance supply inventory
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and building regulations
- Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors as needed
- Maintain accurate records of completed work and maintenance activities
- Assist with room/unit turnovers and general cleaning as needed
The Maintenance Worker is responsible for the day-to-day upkeep, repair, and safety of the facility. This position requires hands-on experience in general maintenance, including basic electrical and plumbing repairs, to ensure the building remains safe, functional, and in good condition for staff and residents.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 2 years of maintenance experience in residential, commercial, or facility settings preferred
- · Working knowledge of basic electrical and plumbing systems
- · Ability to use hand and power tools safely
- · Ability to follow work orders, instructions, and safety protocols
- · Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- · Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb ladders as needed
- Ability to respond to on-call or emergency situations if required
