UPMC Horizon Shenango Valley is seeking a motivated and compassionate Unit Director to lead our Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) team.
This position is eligible for up to a generous $15,000 Sign-On Bonus with a 2-year commitment for experienced Registered Nurses with more than 1 year of experience!
As the only LDRP unit serving Lawrence and Mercer counties, our department offers a unique combination of close‑knit, community‑focused care supported by the strength and resources of a large health system. Our facility includes an 11‑bed labor and delivery unit, a 16‑bed postpartum unit, a Level 2 nursery, and a dedicated doula program that enhances the birth experience for our patients.
We are seeking a dependable, well‑prepared leader with strong experience in women’s health. Labor and Delivery experience is highly preferred, and prior leadership experience is strongly desired. This role requires 24/7 accountability for unit operations, staff support, and overall patient experience. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, engaged, and supportive leader who thrives in a team‑centered environment.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with medical staff to evaluate patient outcomes and leads the development, prioritization, and execution of clinical quality and patient safety initiatives to ensure high‑reliability care across the unit.
- Monitors key quality and performance indicators, identifies trends or opportunities for improvement, and creates targeted action plans that align with organizational standards and strategic goals.
- Incorporates evidence‑based research and best practices into daily operations, guiding teams in adopting new processes and sharing successful improvements across other units or the larger system.
- Analyzes patient and nurse satisfaction data to understand drivers of experience and engagement, and implements strategies to address concerns, strengthen relationships, and elevate overall satisfaction.
- Builds and sustains positive working relationships by modeling professional communication, mentoring staff, and fostering a team environment that supports collaboration and mutual respect.
- Proactively addresses and resolves conflict, promoting transparency, trust, accountability, and open communication to maintain a healthy and supportive work environment.
- Supports staff well‑being and operational safety by collaboratively developing work schedules, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, and promoting practices that encourage work–life balance.
- Coaches staff on diversity, inclusion, and respectful workplace practices, addressing concerns such as horizontal violence or impairment and cultivating a culture where differences are valued.
- Leads the creation and execution of a shared departmental vision, actively engaging staff and stakeholders, and guiding the team through organizational or departmental changes with empathy and strategic clarity.
- Ensures delivery of patient‑centered, evidence‑based care by upholding clinical standards, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and maintaining compliance with professional and regulatory expectations.
- Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by managing departmental budgets, optimizing resource utilization, and adjusting staffing models to safely and efficiently meet patient care needs.
- Supports staff development and leadership growth by creating pathways for professional advancement, encouraging participation in shared governance, mentoring Clinician(s), and ensuring competency-based education for all direct care providers.
