What are the responsibilities and job description for the RIC Registered Nurse, Weekend Program position at UPMC?
The Resource Intensive Care (RIC) Registered Nurse plays a vital role across the organization by providing expert clinical care and support wherever it is needed most. RIC RNs float throughout the hospital, bringing advanced intensive care skills to diverse units and high‑acuity patient populations while serving as a trusted clinical resource at the point of care. This position participates in the Weekend Program, requiring a commitment to working 48 weekends per year, with 24 hours worked each weekend (two 12‑hour shifts or three 8‑hour shifts) scheduled between Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Monday at 7:00 a.m. Holiday scheduling will follow standard departmental expectations.
In this highly autonomous role, the RIC RN partners with interdisciplinary teams to deliver safe, high‑quality, patient‑centered care for complex patients, respond confidently to rapidly changing clinical situations, and support best practices grounded in evidence‑based care and Relationship‑Based Care principles. RIC RNs mentor bedside nurses, model clinical excellence, and contribute to a collaborative, healthy work environment focused on exceptional patient outcomes.
This position is designed for experienced ICU nurses who thrive in dynamic environments. A minimum of one year of recent ICU experience is required to ensure readiness for independent practice across multiple care settings. Due to the advanced nature of this role, Graduate Nurses and nurses without prior ICU experience are not eligible.
