What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist | Western Psychiatric Hospital position at UPMC?
The Phlebotomist has the responsibility and accountability for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection of inpatients and/or outpatients. Samples collected by the phlebotomist are used for laboratory test procedures that are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Phlebotomist may also perform computer, courier, and clerical functions that are essential to laboratory operations. They also work in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Medical Technologists.
Responsibilities:
Customer Interaction
- Interact courteously with customers and respond to inquiries promptly.
Specimen Collection
- Follow patient identification procedures to collect blood and other specimens, including off-site collections.
Compliance and Clerical Duties
- Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies, including safety and quality control.
- Perform clerical duties, including data entry and managing test transactions.
Training and Communication
- Train new employees, students, and residents.
- Inform staff of unusual incidents.
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform arterial punctures and maintain supplies cost-effectively.
