Purpose:

The UPMC Pharmacy Fellowship Program (PAFP) at UPMC Presbyterian is an integrated, 24‑month fellowship designed to develop future leaders through a rotation‑based structure and dedicated scope of responsibility within the UPMC Health System. The first year of the program focuses on longitudinal training within the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, complemented by rotation experiences across a variety of infectious diseases consult services. In the second year, fellows transition into leading projects while continuing their longitudinal stewardship experiences, with additional elective time available to pursue individual clinical or professional interests. Throughout the two‑year program, fellows are expected to manage their assigned responsibilities, complete meaningful projects during each rotation, and learn under the guidance of experienced preceptors and mentors to build strong leadership, clinical, and healthcare management skills. 

Fellows will work weekday, daylight shifts with overnight on call at home once a month (with backup and after trainings), a rotating 4th weekend and 1 major 1 minor holiday 

Infectious Diseases Fellowship | School of Pharmacy

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as an interim leader on institutional leadership committees.
  • Maintain operations, oversee staff and manage all other aspects of assigned scope of responsibility.
  • Completion of the 18 core rotations plus 6 elective rotations. Availability of elective rotations are subject to the fellows' interests and also the availability of the division/department desired.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operational management.
  • Must build relationships throughout the organization and proactively seek projects and opportunities for the second year of the fellowship.
  • Assist in the recruitment of new Administrative Fellows and should serve as a mentor for junior colleagues.
  • Attend all relevant management and administrative meetings. May be required to provide administrative support for some of these meetings.
  • Lead special projects and system-wide initiatives both short and long term.
  • Maintain a portfolio of work and experiences as at the end of the program, Fellows will have gained an understanding of clinical operations both in the pharmacy and in general for the hospital at large, as well as had the opportunity to work in areas such as finance, business/network development, performance improvement, human resources, patient safety/quality, physician relations, nursing relations and marketing/recruitment/ talent acquisition/communications and use the portfolio to demonstrate this involvement.
  • Provide a written summary of experiences and key issues learned at the conclusion of each rotation and must provide feedback on how the rotation could be improved.
  • Participate in a structured mentorship program that requires meeting regularly with preceptors and mentors and provide all necessary information to ensure a mutually beneficial experience.
  • Must complete all tasks and projects as assigned by members of the program director, coordinator and preceptors.
