UPMC offers a robust Laboratory Career Ladder, where candidates will be placed into the correct level and status based on education and background; Lab Support Technician (min= $19.80) Medical Laboratory Technician (min= $24.81) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (min= $28.90) and so on!
Sign On Bonus Information:
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS ): $15,000 with a 2-year commitment
Medical Lab Technician (MLT): $10,000 with a 2-year commitment
MLT/MLS Responsibilities:
· Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
· Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel policies.
· Follow established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample.
· Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
· Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols.
· Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols.
· Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments, their interrelationships and physiological conditions affecting test results.
· Conduct, direct, or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection, and implementation.
· Performs High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) without direct supervision.
· Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department temporarily as delegated.
Lab Support Tech Responsibilities:
- Prepares specimens at workstations for testing.
- Includes building worklists, checking specimens for acceptability (clots, QNS), aliquoting specimens, loading/unloading specimens onto instruments.
- Prepares microscopic slides and plants specimens in microbiologic growth media where required.
- Prepares and replenishes instrument reagents and consumables as needed.
Assists with specimen/slide storage and retrieval.- Checks pending work lists. Investigates and resolves any unprocessed work. - Decontaminates work area, keeping a neat and clean working environment.
All duties of a Specimen Processor including: Answers phone inquiries. Investigates specimen status and report disposition. Directs callers to additional resources as needed.- Receives, sorts, prepares and delivers testing-ready specimens for analysis to work areas. - Demonstrates service orientation approach by conveying courtesy, respect, enthusiasm and a positive attitude in work situations.
Preferred Qualifications: MLT/MLS Degree or a Bachelor's degree for the Lab Support Tech role.
Schedule: Rotating days, weekends and holidays. Rotating shifts: 6a-2p, 7a-3p, 230p-1030p, 3p-11p
