The Certified RNFA independently functions as an assistant to the surgeon 24/7. To direct and deliver advanced level nursing care. To initiate and implement nursing education and change on the unit.

Responsibilities:

  • EDUCATION Takes initiative to identify own learning needs and sets goals for education to improve personal practice. Identifies and meets staff and unit educational needs and follows up with appropriate resources. Actively elevates unit standard of practice by sharing knowledge. Maintains competence through continuing education and keeps abreast of new equipment, procedures and policies. Acts as a resource to staff with equipment troubleshooting.
  • PRACTICE Provides assistance intra operatively in exposure, hemostasis, handling tissue and suturing. Practices independently to provide comprehensive and individualized care through the perioperative continuum using in-depth knowledge with advanced clinical experience as the foundation for perioperative care. Knowledge includes surgical anatomy, physiology and operative techniques. Demonstrates manual dexterity and the appropriate use of surgical instruments. Anticipates steps in the surgical procedure. Acts as patient advocate facilitating the best possible patient outcome.
  • Supports decisions even if in conflict with them. Actively holds peers accountable to established standards of care, policies and procedures in a timely manner. Resolves conflicts effectively. Skillfully problem solves and addresses issues within their control. Juggles multiple demands.
  • COMMUNICATION Performs in an approachable, knowledgeable, calm and professional manner. Consistently respectful of all team members and is team oriented. Interacts with all care team members effectively. Delegates utilizing diplomacy and tact. Interacts well with other departments, vendors and surgeon office staff.
  • LEADERSHIP Initiates activities without being asked to do so. Acts as a professional role model and creates positive unit culture. Shows consistency between words and actions. Evaluates and makes recommendations to improve unit operation in terms of cost management and patient care delivery utilizing change theory to meet desired outcomes.
  • Identifies and communicates pertinent information. Insures an effective handoff-. Communicates unit status to one up leadership in an accurate and thorough manner. Enhances the image of Hamot and promotes the profession of Nursing.
  • Uses critical thinking skills to adjust to unpredictable or complex situations, sets priorities quickly and delegates functions as needed to available staff. Acts as a service excellence role model by acting as an advocate for patients, families and staff. Directly involved in quality assessment and quality improvement process. Utilizes the quality process in solving problems as appropriate. Assures compliance with all JCAHO Standards. Supports new and existing policies through guidance and reinforcement. Recommends and provides input into the development and implementation of new or existing policies and procedures. Assists staff with development of plan of care for patients based on nursing research.
  • Practices continuous surveillance related to safety, Aseptic technique and changes in patient's condition and initiates appropriate action. Demonstrates flexibility to meet unit needs, such as performing circulating or scrub roles. Possesses the ability to obtain and interpret information considering population specific needs. Assures that overall quality of care meets nursing and professional standards
  • Takes an active role in insuring a positive patient experience. Values the patient perception regarding their care. Displays awareness of cultural diversity.
  • SERVICE EXCELLENCE Presents a positive image to the entire healthcare team. Handles information in a confidential manner. Takes time to listen to others/displays empathy. Identifies and meets the full range of customer needs.
