Digital Archivist

unm
Albuquerque, NM Full Time
POSTED ON 1/1/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/28/2026

Center for Southwest Research and Special Collection (CSWR) in Zimmerman Library at the University of New Mexico seeks a Digital Archivist to strengthen our capacity for managing, preserving, and making accessible born digital and digitally reformatted materials within distinctive collections. Incumbents will bring knowledge of digital storage and retrieval systems, a proven ability to work effectively in a community-engaged environment, and interest in learning new skills with colleagues and researchers.

The (CSWR) is an archival research hub within the University of New Mexico Libraries, dedicated to preserving, describing and providing access to varied materials in our own archives and in other collections throughout New Mexico.  We strive to respectfully preserve, document and share the history of UNM, the built environment of the Southwest, and the cultural heritage of New Mexico, the Southwest United States, Mexico, and Latin America – always in consultation with the communities and peoples represented in our collections. Through our endorsement of the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials we aspire to foster increased cooperation between tribal and non-tribal libraries and archives.

The digital archivist will be responsible for facilitating digital preservation in the CSWR, refining and maintaining documented workflows, and guiding file transformation and preservation. This position involves close collaboration with archivists, distinctive collections curators, library services coordinators, IT professionals, and community members to arrange and describe digital collections, employ distinctive reference services, and improve accessibility.

Additional responsibilities include appraising born-digital acquisitions and supporting research involving digital and other archival materials.

The University Environment

The original peoples of New Mexico – Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache – since time immemorial, have deep connections to the land and have made significant contributions to the broader community statewide. We honor the land itself and those who remain stewards of this land throughout the generations and acknowledge our committed relationship to Indigenous peoples. We gratefully recognize our history.
