Job Duties:

Coordinates and delivers career development programming, resource materials, and/or advising to students and alumni. Educates students, alumni, and other stakeholders about career development and opportunities and maintains relationships to aid in effective career planning. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

Serves as a point of contact for student questions regarding program offerings and procedures. Delivers information regarding career path exploration and discovery, career readiness skill building, application materials, networking, job search and interview preparation for students. Provides students with coaching and mentoring throughout the recruitment process.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Educates or advises students and recent alumni individually or in groups through various mediums about career exploration, self-assessment, skills, materials development, and career decisions
  • May identify and maintain a professional network of employers or other stakeholders to facilitate career exploration and employment opportunities for students
  • Develops and delivers career development programming and resource materials across various mediums to provide education to students
  • Responds to questions and provides information regarding student services, policies, procedures, and employment preparation
  • Participates in the campus-wide career services community, providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college/unit

Full-Time: 100%, Academic Staff, 12-month ongoing appointment, one vacancy

Additional duties specific to the position:

  • Provides education via individual appointments, presentations, and group informational sessions in various modalities.

  • Empowers and motivates students through career journeys which may include but is not limited to career and major exploration, writing resumes and application materials, interviewing skills, job/internship search strategies, and applying to graduate schools.

  • Assists and advises students in gaining experience to complement their academic careers such as internships, undergraduate research, field experience, developing their professional networks and effectively using social media for career planning (LinkedIn and Handshake)

  • Conduct major and career exploration, research and goal setting meetings through in-person, virtual or phone appointments.

  • Guide students through access, use and reflection from available assessment tools to evaluate their interests, skills and abilities.

  • Advise students in exploring graduate school research, preparation, application.

  • Document appointment outcomes, notes and time tracking within associated systems.

  • Appointment coverage related to all career services functions, which may include resume and cover letter reviews, preparing for career fair, registering and profile development in Handshake platform, job and internships searches, interview preparation, and/or career closet use.

  • Supervise and manage student employment team: lead operational activities and assess performance.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Link Center, academic departments, academic advising, student engagement, and other units to ensure holistic and coordinated support for students’ career development.

  • Support team members in the development of outreach strategies and managing incoming requests for partnership.

  • Support employer relations by identifying and supporting connections between employers, graduate schools, and prospective student career opportunities.

  • Liaise with employers and regional partners to manage, plan, and execute campus events, meetings, and connections with faculty, students, and campus community.

  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and shared responsibility.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to conduct the ethical, confidential, sensitivity and professionalism standards set forth by the National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE)

  • Knowledge of career coaching and/or advising principles

  • Knowledge of higher education support programs and resources

  • Ability to establish professional rapport and appropriate interpersonal relationships with student clientele

  • Ability to conduct in-person and online presentations in a classroom environment

  • Skilled in both independent and collaborative work environments

  • Ability to think critically and creatively regarding career development topics

  • Skilled in active listening, reading comprehension and continuous learning and development

  • Ability to promote a welcoming environment, engaging diverse student populations and broad backgrounds

  • Skilled working with computer technologies and online tools and systems

  • Ability to lead workshops and presentations regarding career readiness best practices

  • Knowledge and ability to use technologies such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat

Required Qualifications:

Must meet one of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field plus 1 year of relevant work experience performing comparable duties

  • Associate’s degree in any field plus 3 years of relevant work experience performing comparable duties

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling or related field

  • Three (3) years' experience working in higher education, career development, coaching or related field

  • Management experience

Compensation & Benefits: Salary range for this position is: $46,000 - $51,000 annually. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, competitively priced health/dental/vision/life insurance, tax-advantaged savings accounts, and participation in the nationally recognized Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension fund.
