Job Duties

As part of the Office of Sustainability (OoS) at UW-Milwaukee (UWM), the Sustainability Programs Coordinator supports the advancement of campus-wide sustainability initiatives including engagement, data management, reporting, and strategic program development and implementation. Under the general direction of the Sustainability Director, and through a collaborative approach with stakeholders, this position plays a critical role in advancing resilience, adaptation, and environmental wellbeing for the UWM campus and community.

Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Develop and implement a broad range of sustainability initiatives
  • Supervise student employees, interns, and volunteers
  • Evaluate sustainability programming, projects, and initiatives through reporting and analysis of key university-wide metrics
  • Collaborate with diverse partners and stakeholders to advance priorities and promote a culture of sustainability
  • Communicate on behalf of the Office of Sustainability
  • Navigate a complex range of projects and programs within a non-linear work environment
  • Provide back-up operational support for surplus and recycling operations
  • Manage campus compost and food diversion operations

This position is not eligible for hybrid work and requires 100% onsite work.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Evaluates sustainability projects, programs, and events, making adjustments and enhancements as necessary
  • Collaborates with campus and community partners to execute initiatives and to promote the unit sustainability program
  • Leads and implements unit sustainability initiatives that promote a culture of sustainability through awareness and behavior changes in students, staff, and the community
  • May supervise and lead the work of student workers
  • Develops and maintains training and support materials that provide guidance to students and staff
  • Serves as a liaison to internal and external stakeholders to support various unit initiatives and serves as a resource to students, staff, and the community

Compensation: $62,000-$67,000 / year (Final salary offer will be determined based on knowledge, skills, and experience).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in any area of study
  • Minimum of one year of supervision experience in a professional setting
  • Minimum of one year using Microsoft Office, including Excel, in a professional environment
  • Demonstrated experience with professional workplace communication via various methods
  • Demonstrated experience managing institutional composting and food waste diversion programs
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver license (or other such valid operator's permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation) and be able to meet or exceed the minimum requirements for driving on state business as detailed here: https://uwm.edu/risk-management/drivers/
  • Minimum one year experience operating a box truck in a professional setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in any area of study
  • Experience working in a higher education environment
  • Experience analyzing large data sets using sustainability software platforms (e.g. SIMAP)
  • Experience in sustainability reporting (e.g. STARS, Greenhouse Gas Inventory, etc.)
  • Experience in data collection with a focus on sustainability metrics (e.g. energy, water, waste, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students, support employee development, and promote a healthy workplace culture
  • Demonstrated ability to self-direct, to make autonomous and proactive decisions, and to effectively communicate issues and concerns
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, evaluate, and modify sustainability programming
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and programs with different timelines, scales, and scopes
  • Demonstrated experience operating recycling and warehouse equipment, including cardboard baler, recycling compactor, and pallet jacks
