Job Duties

The Assistive Technology Coordinator supports equitable access for students with disabilities by overseeing the delivery of accessible course materials and assistive technology services. This role collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to ensure accommodations are implemented accurately, on time, and in alignment with accessibility regulations, while contributing to the ongoing improvement of accessibility services.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Coordinate and deliver accessible course materials, including alternate formats, assistive technologies, and notetaking tools.
  • Manage alternate format and assistive technology workflows, including timelines, documentation, and issue resolution.
  • Provide training and technical support to students, faculty, and staff related to assistive technologies and accommodation processes.
  • Maintain and manage assistive technology inventories, including student loan, checkout, and return processes.
  • Support compliance with ADA, Section 504, and institutional accessibility policies by implementing approved accommodations and applying accessibility best practices.

The incumbent will be expected to observe an unpaid work break two months out of the year. Typically, the unpaid work breaks are expected to be in June and July, but the dates may vary each year.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Monitors deadlines and work flow processes to ensure delivery of services
  • Selects and implements technology solutions, and develop and updates processes
  • Tests, troubleshoots, and resolves issues post-implementation
  • Converts materials (print, electronic documents, video, and/or audio) into alternative formats by utilizing technological mediums and various strategies

Department: The Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee is dedicated to providing equal access for disabled students to the University's academic, social, cultural and recreational programs. We provide comprehensive services and accommodations for disabled students, as well as outreach and support to faculty and staff. The ARC is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible University experience for all students.

Compensation: $35,000-$40,000/annually (this is the salary amount prorated based on 2 months of unpaid leave). Salary will be determined by finalist's experience, training, education, and equity-based factors.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least one year of work experience with disabled individuals.
  • Knowledge of PDF remediation using Adobe Acrobat Pro, including reading order, and tagging. Please include clear evidence of knowledge in each area in your resume and/or cover letter.
  • Knowledge of assistive technologies, such as braille displays, digital magnifiers, hearing assistive technology, notetaking systems, screen reading software, and text-to-speech and voice recognition software. Please include clear evidence of knowledge in each area in your resume and/or cover letter.
  • Knowledge of multimedia accessibility standards including audio descriptions, captions, and transcripts. Please include clear evidence of knowledge in each area in your resume and/or cover letter.
  • Knowledge of disability laws and regulations including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504, and Section 508. Please include clear evidence of knowledge of each of these laws and regulations in your resume and/or cover letter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in occupational therapy, special education, or rehabilitation sciences and technology.
  • Two or more years of experience working with disabled individuals.
  • Experience with PDF remediation using Adobe Acrobat Pro, including form fields, reading order, and tagging.
  • Experience with assistive technologies including braille displays, digital magnifiers, listening assistive technology, notetaking systems, screen reading software, and text-to-speech and voice recognition software.
  • Experience with the use and application of multimedia accessibility standards, including audio descriptions, captions, and transcripts.
  • WisTech Assistive Technology Certification or RESNA Assistive Technology Professional Certification.
