This position performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist the nuclear medicine physicians, while adhering to all radiation safety policies and functioning as a liaison between the patient and physician. This position provides direct patient care and may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities

  • Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients by IV injection, inhalation or oral administration.
  • Performs full range of nuclear medicine dynamic, static, SPECT and PET imaging procedures.
  • Maintains compliance with radiation safety policies and documentation requirements for receipt, disposal, and administration of radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Explains procedures to the patients.
  • Prepares the instrument sets and equipment, and assists the patient in positioning to obtain required diagnostic quality.
  • Communicates patient status and information to the appropriate physician.
  • Identifies and ensures quality control measures for imaging and surveying equipment, dose calibrators and radiation safety monitors recording results.
  • Mentors nuclear medicine technology students in the clinical work environment and may educate students in an academic setting.
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory inventory and ordering supplies.
  • Verifies scan quality and performs computer image and data processing.
  • Calculates quantity of radiopharmaceutical activity and volume to be administered following prescribed procedures.
  • Assays specimens and prepares standards in scintillation counting systems, performs calculations and records results.
  • Performs procedures on emergency call. Optimizes imaging procedures and uses appropriate judgment to maximize image quality.
  • Functions independently, working in cooperation with coworkers and coordinating patient needs and procedures with physicians.
  • Serves as a liaison between the physicians and patients. Communicates any special patient and procedure needs.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.
  • Proficient in the use of the PACs system to retrieve and archive data. Performs all RIS functions (scheduling, completing, etc), as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates the ability to properly identify and administer radiopharmaceuticals.

Required

  • While ARRT (N) or NMTCB (CNMT) are required immediately upon hire, the candidate will be required to obtain ARRT (CT) or NMTCB (CT) within one (1) year of hire.
  • Training and/or experience in the latest techniques of radiation safety, radiopharmaceutical preparation and computer processing techniques to perform patient examinations.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Radiologic Technologist in the State of Utah.
  • One of the following
    • Nuclear Medicine Technician Certification (CNMT) from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
    • ARRT Registration as Nuclear Medicine Technology R.T. (N)(ARRT).
  • One of the following
    • ARRT Registration as a Computed Tomography Technologist R.T.(CT)(ARRT).
    • Computed Tomography (CT) Certification from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).

* Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.
