The Center for Medical Innovation ( CMI ) is the University of Utah’s medical device incubator and venture studio. We help innovators, entrepreneurs, and startups take bold ideas and turn them into real, market-ready medical technologies to launch into the market. From hands-on programs to in-house prototyping and regulatory support, we’re built to move fast and solve real problems in healthcare.

We have opened the James LeVoy Sorenson Center for Medical Innovation ( SCMI ) — a next-gen facility with state-of-the-art prototyping labs, an ISO -8 cleanroom, and advanced engineering resources that supercharge our ability to develop breakthrough medical devices.

The Role

We’re looking for a talented Medical Device Engineer to design, develop, prototype, and evaluate innovative medical devices and equipment. You will play a key role in turning clinical needs into functional prototypes and commercial-ready solutions within our venture studio environment.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop, and evaluate a wide range of medical devices and equipment, including braces, prostheses, medication pumps, imaging equipment, implants, and other diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
  • Create detailed models, prototypes, and technical drawings using CAD and other drafting tools.
  • Conduct product testing, feasibility assessments, and failure analysis studies to ensure devices perform as designed.
  • Determine design specifications, perform adjustments, calibrations, and iterative improvements.
  • Create and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • May manage project schedules and budgets for assigned development projects.
  • May support clinical and preclinical assessments of devices.
  • May support other departmental programs and initiatives, as needed

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Medical Device & Equipment Engineer, II: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) 2 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in medical device design, prototyping, and development.
  • Proficiency with CAD software and prototyping tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to conduct feasibility studies and failure analysis.
  • Knowledge of medical device regulations, standards, and best practices (preferred).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work with clinicians, innovators, and cross-functional teams.
  • Passion for advancing healthcare innovation through rigorous engineering.

Salary : $75,000 - $84,000
