Assistant Director of Risk Management

Plans, organizes, and directs all daily risk management activities. Directly supervises the departmental clerical staff related to all insurance related matters including claims involving property, liability, and worker’s compensation, to make sure that the daily operations of the risk management department are performed in a timely and efficient manner. Manage systems for the collection and analysis of exposure and loss data and maintain applicable records. Assist the University community with insurance programs and procedures, develop risk mitigation strategies, provide review and recommendations for risk management contractual issues, and develop program goals that support departmental and institutional strategic and enterprise risk management objectives. Serves as backup to the Director of the Department for risk management related tasks.


Duties/Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of risk management for the University. Advise management of current trends in risk assessment in higher education. Recommend improvements or modifications in current methods of operations.
  • Directs the negotiation of property and liability insurance purchases and policy amendments. Reviews records and make recommendations on all University property and liability insurance policies.
  • Administer daily risk management programs and activities. Study and research policies from regional, state, other universities, and national sources to assure the University remains compliant with our risk management strategies.
  • Manage the reporting process (for potential insurance claim purposes) regarding Title VII and Title IX matters which includes regular communication and a cooperative working relationship with University’s Title IX Coordinator and appropriate insurance companies (including claim adjusters).
  • Manage the risk management personnel and assist with management of department budget. Direct and supervise the support and student worker staff of risk management. With input from the director, conduct the annual support employee evaluation process.
  • Reviews and files records of claims with appropriate insurance carriers. Serves as liaison with insurance carriers. Settles bodily injury and property damage claims within prescribed settlement authority. Provides timely claim status and claim expenditure reports.
  • Directs the certificate of insurance process regarding issuance of outgoing certificates and processing of incoming certificates.
  • Reviews and advises appropriate departments on risk management and insurance concerns for affiliation agreements required for student clinical experiences.
  • Implements policies and procedures for the organization and administration of risk management.
  • Direct the University’s approved fleet safety policy and processes, which includes the Risk Management department’s approving of authorized drivers and maintaining list of approved drivers.
  • Directs the process of insurance policy invoice reviews and payments in a timely basis to appropriate insurance carriers; similarly, directs the payments processes for repairs against the auto and mobile equipment self-insurance fund.
  • Works with the Manager, Environmental Health and Safety on obtaining information regarding the monitoring, evaluating and tracking of appropriate safety training activities administered by the physical plant, including retention of master file of appropriate training.
  • Collaborates with Manager of Environmental, Health and Safety as necessary regarding inspections of University facilities, structures, equipment and property for existing or potentially hazardous conditions. Recommends corrective and/or preventive measures to eliminate or reduce risk.
  • Frequent contacts with senior staff beyond the department and beyond the University, requiring tact and diplomacy, and involving elements of discussion and negotiation.
  • Ensure department’s website is accurate and contains up-to-date information.
  • Serves as a resource to all academic programs as it relates to risk management and safety matters.
  • Serves as a member of the University Safety Committee, Child Protection Committee, and chair of the Traffic Appeals Committee (for staff and visitors), and various ad-hoc committees.
  • Reviews and recommends updates to all safety plans, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA and applicable federal, state, local and University regulations.
  • Study and constantly review workflow, sequence of operations and office arrangement.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with internal (students, faculty, staff) and external constituents, insurance broker, insurance companies and other outside service providers.
  • Enthusiastic and energetic person with a high degree of initiative who is sensitive to the needs of a diverse University population.
  • Must be able to multi-task. Must possess extremely strong accuracy, analytical and numeric skills. Demonstrated ability to learn, retain and apply laws, regulations and policy is required.
  • Must possess effective communication skills including strong listening skills, clear spoken communication, and precise written communication. Able to review and understand contract language, and terms and conditions.
  • Must be a capable problem solver who exercises good judgment, shows concern for compliance and customer service, and makes good decisions.
  • Refined knowledge of computers and computer-based systems including risk management/insurance applications and Microsoft Office applications.


Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Master’s in Business Administration or similar advance degree is highly preferred. Associate in Risk Management (ARM) certification is preferred.
  • Five years’ experience in risk management, occupational safety or insurance industry preferred.
  • Management of staff experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education is preferred.
  • Banner knowledge is preferred.


Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

  • Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Occasional irregular hours may be required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
