Department Student Support and Success Job Purpose

The Academic Accommodations Specialist delivers coordinated academic support for accommodation and accessibility services, enabling students to thrive at The University of Scranton. This position ensures institutional compliance with federal and state disability law, provides individualized accommodation and case management services, and collaborates across academic and administrative units to cultivate a learning environment consistent with the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission and commitment to the education of the whole person.

Essential Duties

  • Serve as primary point of contact for all testing accommodation requests, ensuring timely and accurate processing in accordance with approved accommodation plans
  • Coordinate the scheduling, administration, and tracking of accommodation-based exams, including extended time, reduced-distraction area, assistive technology, and other approved testing accommodations
  • Communicate with faculty and staff regarding testing materials and procedures, and follow up to resolve delays and other issues
  • Document potential instances of non-compliance as they relate to testing accommodations, such as untimely receipt of exams, as well as student academic dishonesty
  • Train and supervise graduate assistants (GAs) in test proctoring procedures
  • In the absence of GAs and other assigned staff, directly monitor testing sessions to ensure compliance with approved accommodations and university academic integrity policies
  • Generate reports on testing volume, accommodation utilization, and operational trends to inform staffing, space planning, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to hire, train, assign, and supervise notetakers
  • Serve as a member of the University’s ADA committee to assist in providing academic support services for students with disabilities, including evaluation and interpretation of documentation
  • Foster a welcoming and supportive environment for students seeking accommodations; maintain ongoing caseload support for enrolled students throughout the accommodation process
  • Work with students to obtain and effectively use appropriate auxiliary learning aids (e.g., e-books, assistive listening devices)
  • Maintain confidential files and records for students receiving services through the OSSS
  • Provide information to prospective students and their families regarding services, transition concerns, documentation guidelines, and the accommodation process
  • Stay current with disability law and collaborate with Human Resources, General Counsel, and the Office of Institutional Compliance to disseminate information and make recommendations to ensure compliance
  • Provide guidance to faculty and staff on working with students seeking accommodations

Additional Skills Required

  • Experience with testing accommodations or disability/accessibility services in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., Section 504, ADA)
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in disability/accessibility services
  • Experience with case management
  • Experience maintaining confidential records in compliance with FERPA and related privacy regulations
  • Ability to train and supervise student workers or graduate assistants
  • Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, particularly in working with college students and faculty
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within an academic community
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong problem-solving and creative thinking skills
  • Ability to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment
  • The ability to uphold human dignity and respect by recognizing each person’s worth, valuing diverse perspectives, and treating others with kindness, fairness, and empathy
  • Must be able to respect, support and contribute to the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission

Minimum Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required

Preferred Education

  • Master’s degree is preferred

Minimum Job Experience Requirements

  • At least one (1) year of experience with testing accommodation services, disability services, or in an academic learning center in a higher education setting at the time of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) or more years of experience with testing accommodation services, disability services, or in an academic learning center in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with and supervising student workers or Graduate Assistants

Years of Experience 1 University Classification Professional FLSA Classification Exempt Schedule/Work Hours Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional hours as required. Full Time/Part Time Full-Time Annual Schedule 12
