Med-Surgery

The Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is seeking a dedicated and highly motivated Laboratory Research Technician III to join our transplantation immunology research team. Our laboratory focuses on uncovering the mechanisms behind immune rejection of transplanted organs and developing innovative strategies to prevent this rejection. By bridging basic immune mechanisms with innovative translational approaches, our goal is to develop clinical therapies that will allow transplant recipients to live healthy lives without the requirement for lifelong immunosuppression.

In this role, the successful candidate will independently perform a variety of laboratory experiments, including both in vitro and in vivo immunological studies using mouse models. Responsibilities will include managing and maintaining mouse colonies, performing surgeries, generating bone marrow chimeras, and conducting molecular biology techniques such as PCR, flow cytometry, RNA extraction, and retroviral transduction of bone marrow cells. The Laboratory Research Technician III will also be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting experimental data, maintaining detailed records, and preparing data presentations to support manuscript and grant writing efforts.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a related field, along with at least two years of research experience. Candidates should have proficiency in small animal handling, surgical skills, sterile cell culture techniques, and flow cytometry. A solid understanding of immunological principles is highly desirable. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal abilities are essential, as the role involves collaboration with the Principal Investigator, colleagues, and external collaborators.

This position offers the opportunity to work autonomously with general supervision, requiring routine problem solving within established guidelines. The Laboratory Research Technician III will also manage laboratory inventories and assist with ordering supplies to ensure smooth laboratory operations.

At the Starzl Transplantation Institute, we offer a collaborative environment where scientific excellence is driven by clinical necessity. We are seeking an enthusiastic contributor who recognizes the significance of their work and is committed to advancing research that bridges the gap between the laboratory and the patient’s bedside. By joining our team, you will play a critical role in a mission-driven program dedicated to improving the lives of those suffering from organ failure through cutting-edge immunological discovery.

Essential Functions

The Laboratory Research Technician III will be responsible for the meticulous execution of complex in vitro and in vivo immunological studies, including islet transplantation, bone marrow chimera generation, and retroviral transduction. This role requires high-level technical proficiency in cell sorting, flow cytometry, and sterile culture techniques, alongside the ability to perform rigorous statistical analysis and data interpretation. Beyond the bench, the incumbent manages a sophisticated mouse breeding colony—utilizing PCR and flow cytometry for genetic screening—and ensures laboratory productivity through precise record-keeping and protocol optimization. Additionally, the candidate oversees critical administrative and regulatory functions, including laboratory inventory management, safety compliance, and the drafting of animal protocols, manuscripts, and grant proposals. Exceptional organizational and communication skills are required to facilitate seamless collaboration with the Principal Investigator and the broader research team.

Physical Effort

This position requires the physical stamina to stand for extended periods while conducting meticulous laboratory experiments and performing surgical procedures. The incumbent must be capable of frequent walking to transport specimens and reagents between various core facilities and the laboratories of internal and external collaborators. While the role does not involve heavy lifting, it requires high manual dexterity for small animal surgery and the precise handling of delicate laboratory instrumentation.
