What are the responsibilities and job description for the Development Technician 3 - Civil and Environmental Engineering position at University of Nevada, Reno?
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Development Technician 3. This is a full time, state-funded position in a vibrant and exciting academic department with an accredited engineering program. This position provides lay off rights, and reports to the Department Chair. The Development Technician supports the department’s instructional and research needs and activities by maintaining laboratory operations, equipment, and facilities. Responsibilities include preparing labs, setting up equipment and materials, performing routine maintenance/troubleshooting, as well as coordinating purchases and repairs. The position provides hands-on support to faculty and students, including training on equipment use and design/fabrication of specialized equipment, assemblies, and experimental setups.
The role ensures a safe and compliant laboratory environment by conducting safety trainings, enforcing procedures, and maintaining proper documentation. Additional duties include managing inventories and assets, coordinating with campus facilities and outside vendors, supporting space and equipment needs, and lab/department space remodels and office moves. The position assists with overall department operations, student club activities, departmental events, lab tours, and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field and two (2) years of experience in the fabrication, maintenance, calibration, repair and modification of a variety of electrical, mechanical and/or computerized equipment and computer systems; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in civil engineering testing equipment for soil, concrete, steel and composite materials and to a lesser extent, analytical and process equipment.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting/problem solving ability.
- Curiosity and eagerness to learn and operate new equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to work and make decisions independently
Schedule
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.
Compensation Grade
Grade 35
In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
