Job Description
PURPOSE
The Language and Literacy Coach supports educators and Local Education Agencies (LEAs) in developing and implementing effective instructional methods, assessments, and activities to improve academic performance.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Increase student achievement through evidence-based instructional practices.
REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
Submit required data and activity reports using DESE-designated systems
OVERALL PROGRAM ACTIVITIES
- Collaborate with RPDCs and DESE to support identified districts and schools
- Participate in regular literacy planning meetings
- Assist with statewide data collection and analysis
- Support LEAs in improving student achievement and postsecondary outcomes
- Promote implementation of evidence-based practices
TRAINING ACTIVITIES
K–5:
- Deliver LETRS-aligned training focused on science of reading
- Support instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension
- Provide LETRS training and assist with literacy and reading success plans
- Vet instructional resources as directed
6–12:
- Provide training aligned with Missouri Read, Lead, Exceed and Aspire initiatives
- Support literacy across content areas and disciplinary practices
- Coach on instructional materials, assessments, and implementation
- Assist with literacy and reading success plans and resource vetting
COACHING
- Provide coaching to teachers on LETRS/Aspire implementation and science of reading practices
- Support instructional coaches in improving teacher coaching effectiveness
- Assist with intervention planning
PLANNING / COLLABORATION
- Mentor new coaches and consultants
MEETINGS / CONFERENCES
- Participate in required virtual meetings, trainings, and statewide sessions at the Direction of DESE
- Attend and actively participate in statewide in-person monthly resource, support and training meetings, as designated by the DESE master calendar and direction from DESE Technical Contact and/or DESE Literacy team.
- Attend and present at conferences as requested
TRAVEL
Travel within the Heart of Missouri RPDC region on a regular basis and occasionally beyond to support DESE initiatives and required meetings
Shift
Monday-Friday
8:00am to 5:00pm
12 month appointment. 40 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with the science of reading and associated instruction, intervention, and assessment practices.
Three (3) years of classroom experience and elementary or secondary content-specific teaching certificate.
Must complete or have completed Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Volume 1 and Volume II Training (this can be completed after hire date and provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Seconary Education (DESE) if necessary).
Have completed or will complete Aspire Training (this can be completed after hire date and provided by DESE if necesary) as required by DESE.

Anticipated Hiring Range
Salary Range: $52,915.20 - $57,000 annually, as per grant funding
