KCUR is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual contributor for the role of Finance and Budget Consultant. This position is a crucial member of our team, responsible for the full array of accounting, financial and budgeting activities to support the University (UMKC) owned radio station, KCUR. This position will plan and implement direction, strategies, and processes to ensure appropriate business procedures and policies are in place, identify potential areas of exposure and make recommendations to address issues.

UMKC and KCUR are currently exploring a separation whereby KCUR would become an independent community owned non-profit organization. It is anticipated that this will occur in the next 18 months. This position and role will move to the new organization, should this transition of ownership occur.

Job Description

Strategic Financial Planning: Collaborate with leadership to drive strategic planning activities encompassing accounting, financial analysis, and budgeting for KCUR.

Budget Formulation: Work closely with leadership to formulate budgets, develop financial plans, and actively monitor financial performance, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

Accounting and Financial Statement Analysis: Work closely with internal and external auditors in annual year end closing, audit, and preparation of financial statements, as needed.

Liaison Role: Act as a key liaison between central finance and KCUR leadership, fostering effective communication and ensuring successful implementation of financial strategies and performance objectives.

Grants Management: Undertake significant financial management of grants, including interpretation and application of policies, allowable allocation of expenditures, tracking cost share, local grant match budgets, and effective oversight of subcontracts.

Mentoring Opportunities: May involve overseeing and guiding team members, providing mentorship, and ensuring smooth operation of financial activities within the assigned areas.

Change in Ownership Responsibilities: May assist as needed in helping select vendors for the new organization, implementing the new solutions and setting up the new organization.

Once KCUR is an independent entity there will be responsibilities in new areas ex. banking and financial policy development and many others.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor all fiscal activity (revenues, expenses, balance sheet and grants) for KCUR.
  • Monitor capital asset activity (where appropriate).
  • Oversee the financial management of grants, including interpretation and application of policies, allowable allocation of expenditures, tracking cost share, local grant match budgets, and effective oversight of subcontracts.
  • Work with leadership to formulate budgets, develop financial plans (strategy and long-range plans), and monitor performance against plan ensuring alignment with organizational goals on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Provide financial leadership and expertise; act as a liaison between the central finance office and KCUR.
  • Work closely with internal and external auditors as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, fiduciary, fiscal, and reporting requirements to ensure resources are well utilized.
  • May oversee and guide team members, providing mentorship, and ensuring smooth operation of financial activities within the assigned areas.
  • Work as needed on ad hoc projects and reports.
  • Other duties as assigned

Shift

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), benefit eligible, staff position.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field. Master’s degree or professional certification (CPA) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning, preferably in an academic or research-oriented environment.
  • Strong accounting background and skills with proven expertise in financial statement analysis.
  • Demonstrated expertise in grants management, including a strong understating of policies, compliance, and financial reporting associated with grant funding.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including business leaders, central finance teams, and external partners.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in fund accounting (non-profit, GASB).
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $70,512 - $96,000 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
