Job Summary

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Department of Classical Studies has been authorized to make an appointment in Latin language and pedagogy for the full-time position of a Lecturer III in Latin with a preferred start date of January 1, 2027. A start date of August 1, 2027 is also possible. We invite applicants qualified to teach courses in Latin at all levels. The ideal candidate will also excel at recruiting current and prospective U-M students to the Department and will be able to take a leading role in the Department's outreach efforts to Latin teachers and students in the state of Michigan.

This is a non-tenure-track appointment for an initial three-year period followed by a major review, which may lead to appointment as Lecturer IV, a position defined to have presumption of renewal and expectation of recurring work provided that there is instructional need and budgetary support within the academic unit and that the Employee's performance meets the standards. The teaching load is 3 courses a term, per the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Lecturers' Employee Organization (LEO).

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities include: regular teaching in the four-semester sequence in elementary Latin that satisfies the undergraduate language requirement in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; occasional teaching in other areas of the departmental curriculum, including ancient Greek, as necessitated by departmental needs; and contributing in a variety of ways to building the Latin and ancient Greek programs. The person holding this position is also expected to remain current on new instructional materials and methodologies in language teaching.

Desired Qualifications*

A Ph.D. in Classics or other related field. Experience in secondary education is welcome. This is a university-year (nine-month) appointment with a preferred start date of January 1, 2027.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
