Job Summary

XTRM/SPRL Labs is a facility of the College of Engineering that serves clients who are faculty, government agencies (such as NASA and DoD), and commercial companies in the development of

unique integrated systems and instrumentation that are often used in challenging environments (e.g. space, arctic, above/on/below the water). The XTRM/SPRL Lab professional staff, with faculty and researchers, have built more than 35 space systems and instruments; instrumented numerous sounding rockets, balloons and aircraft; and developed ground-based instruments. For seven decades SPRL has been one of a handful of university centers able to conceive, design, build, test, and operate space flight instruments a truly "end-to-end" operation.

The engineer will perform engineering design and testing work in the sub-field of space instrumentation for space and planetary sciences with an emphasis on data management and control system. The engineer will be responsible for implementation of hardware and software subsystems in support of primary research and instrument development. This includes assisting with new instrument development and instrument testing using specialized equipment. Electronic design is anticipated supporting data system development, and signal conditioning electronics. These duties are performed under supervision and direction by experienced engineers.

Responsibilities*

Instrument testing, including use of specialized equipment

Support of proposal development especially in space systems

Design for sensors and equipment that operates in extreme environments of temperature, vacuum, radiation, and must survive the harsh vibration and shock of the spacecraft launch environment

Data systems design, including selection of parts, materials, and process to survive harsh environments.

Required Qualifications*

BS in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or relevant areas

Familiarity with power supply systems

Familiarity with the space environment including effects on electronics and materials

Work as part of a team of faculty, research scientists, engineers, and technicians

Must be a U.S. citizen to comply with sponsor (NASA) regulations.

Desired Qualifications*

MS or other advanced degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics

Experience in industry or student projects designing systems and equipment for application in space environments, especially with consideration to charging, radiation, high voltage isolation or other effects on design of electric equipment

Experience in industry or student projects with space system hardware, especially power systems

Salary : $65,000 - $75,000
