Who We Are

Established in 1971, The Marian E. Wright Writing Center is the oldest writing center in Michigan. We serve University of Michigan-Flint undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff, and community members from all disciplines with writing. We tutor all forms of academic writing, resumes, cover letters, presentations, and creative writing. Tutors are expected to be highly engaged, helpful readers who provide positive, constructive feedback to writers during any stage of the writing process. Our services are designed to support people's growth as writers and reviewers of their own work--we believe this growth occurs paper by paper. Our Writing Center is committed to promoting and supporting a supportive environment for students to learn and grow as writers and learners. Our mission statement is: "To be critical readers and listeners who provide helpful feedback to writers and speakers. Be a Reader!"

Job Summary

Role of the Tutor: When considering your application for this position, it's important to note that tutors are not line by line editors. They work holistically with all phases of the writing process to help students develop their own ideas, work through writing related issues, learn to use online writing and citation resources, and receive feedback based on the tutors' own understanding as a reader. The instructor is the only authority over the writer's work. This can often be a shock to new tutors. The most important skills in a tutor's toolbox are interpersonal communication: asking thoughtful questions, active listening, being a collaborator, and empowering the student's own ideas. Therefore, there is an initial training phase, but training continues throughout the tutor's employment. We also have required attendance at Friday, monthly staff meetings that supports additional training and professional development.
