General Summary of Position

The Digital Media Program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks a part-time adjunct faculty member to teach DGMD.4200 Podcasting during the designated academic semester.

Podcasting is an advanced production course in which students research, develop, record, edit, and publish original audio programs of increasing complexity. Building upon foundational skills in audio production, the course addresses podcast concept development, research, interviewing, scriptwriting, story structure, producing, location scouting, scheduling, field recording, voice-over, sound design, editing, mixing, and distribution.

Students may produce documentary, interview-based, narrative, journalistic, educational, promotional, or client-based podcasts. The course should introduce students to professional podcasting workflows, including media hosting, RSS feeds, podcast artwork, metadata, publishing platforms, audience development, and ethical and legal considerations.

The successful candidate will provide hands-on instruction, guide students through individual and collaborative productions, evaluate creative and technical work, and support an inclusive and professionally oriented learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in audio production, media arts, communications, journalism, filmmaking, sound studies, media studies, or a related field, or active progress toward completion of such a degree.
  • Candidates holding a bachelor’s degree may be considered with a minimum of three years of significant relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in podcasting, audio storytelling, radio, journalism, field sound production, sound editing, or related media production.
  • Knowledge of research, interviewing, scriptwriting, story development, producing, recording, editing, mixing, and publishing audio programs.
  • Experience with microphones, portable recorders, field mixers, wireless systems, voice-over recording, monitoring, gain staging, and location sound practices.
  • Familiarity with DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Cloud—including Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro—and other digital audio production software.
  • Ability to teach creative and technical production workflows to students with varying levels of experience.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Additional Considerations

  • Prior college-level teaching experience is preferred.
  • Evidence of having previously taught podcasting, audio production, journalism, media production, filmmaking, communications, or a related subject.
  • Professional experience producing, hosting, editing, or distributing podcasts, radio programs, documentary audio, or other episodic media.
  • Experience teaching or working with Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Audacity, Hindenburg, Descript, Riverside, or comparable recording and editing platforms.
  • Familiarity with podcast hosting services, RSS feeds, metadata, podcast artwork, publishing platforms, and distribution to major podcast directories.
  • Experience with documentary research, interviewing, narrative development, voice-over direction, creative sound design, and music integration.
  • Understanding of copyright, licensing, releases, attribution, consent, journalistic ethics, accessibility, and responsible uses of generative artificial intelligence.
  • Experience supervising collaborative, client-based, or experiential learning projects.
  • Evidence of professionally produced work, broadcast credits, published podcast episodes, festival recognition, exhibitions, or comparable accomplishments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching and working with a diverse student population.
