What are the responsibilities and job description for the Integrative Care Technician position at University of Maryland Medical System?
The Integrative Care Team (ICT) provides comprehensive integrative therapies for all patients, families, and staff within the inpatient setting at University of Maryland Medical Center. Holistic nursing is defined as “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal.” Our current hours of operation are Monday thru Friday 10am until 8pm.
Types and Ages of Patients / Clients Serviced
ICT serves all ages of inpatients. From the newborn to the dying patient, ICT provides treatments to patients, clients (families and staff) while at UMMC.
Scope and Complexity of Patient Care Needs
ICT provides a holistic approach to patient/client care needs. This six-step process comes from the Holistic Nursing Scope and Standard of Practice. “The holistic caring process involves six often simultaneously occurring steps: assessment, diagnosis, (identification of pattern/problem/need/ health issue), outcomes, and therapeutic plan of care, implementation, and evaluation.”
Strategies to Assess and Meet Patient Care Needs
Patient/Client needs are assessed upon the request of therapies. Therapies include, but are not limited to, Reiki, sound, art for compassion, yoga, breathing techniques, music, and acupressure, M-Technique, and pediatric massage. The Integrative Care Nurse obtains basic clinical information and based upon the patient / client need the plan of care is developed and therapies implemented. Outcomes are documented and evaluation of the plan is continuous with input from the patient/client. The ICT honors the active participation of the patient/client in their healing journey. The goal of healing is established by the patient/ client instead of the nurse.
Patient Care Providers
The Integrative Care Team consists of nurses and technicians who are certified in Integrative Therapies. Everyone is BLS certified and required to maintain all necessary competencies and continuing education for certifications. Hospital and departmental orientation is provided to staff in addition to annual training and ongoing professional development.
Extent to Which Care Meets Patient Needs
The ICT strives to maintain the continuum of care provided for the patients/ clients at the University of Maryland Medical Center. From the initial consultation to the development of the plan of care to the implementation of therapies, the ICT focus on the holistic approach of the interrelationships of the mind-body-spirit. The ICT is person- relationship centered and healing vs. cure oriented.
Mission Statement
The Integrative Care team is a collaboration of healthcare practitioners dedicated to providing customized patient centered care that combines conventional medicine with proven integrative modalities to motivate and assist patients and caregivers to optimize their health by becoming active participants in the healing journey.
Work Experience
1. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.; BSN preferred. Up-to-date status on all mandatory training and classes.
2. One year nursing experience. Solid knowledge and clinical skills.
3. Current CPR certification required.
4. Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education every two years.
5. Member of a professional organization.
6. Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.
